Cornerback Aaron Colvin returned for his senior year at Oklahoma to win some games, win some awards and put himself in prime ...
Keeping with the Big 12 vs. SEC theme of the week, I found something pretty cool from a year ago, when the two conferences ...
We're still more than a year and a half from the first College Football Playoff, and the first CFP selection committee, and ...
A few thoughts on the updated roster that appeared on Oklahoma's website Wednesday night:
* There are five obvious omissions: Suspended WRs Jaz Reynolds, Trey Franks, Kameel Jackson, suspended DB Quentin Hayes and K Patrick O'Hara.
You figured the receivers' days were numbered when Jay Norvell added Jalen Saunders and LaColton Bester. Remember, though, that Norvell told me a couple weeks ago that a final decision on the suspendees wouldn't come down until later this summer. For what it's worth.
O'Hara, the walk-on who wound up kicking for the Sooners after filming himself kicking balls around an empty Topeka stadium, was a cool story and a really nice kid. Then Michael Hunnicutt came along.
O'Hara's still a cool story and a nice kid. He'll just need a new place to tell it.
* There are two obvious position changes: Defensive end Geneo Grissom is now a tight end, while linebacker Rashod Favors is now a D-end.
The Sooners are starting over at tight end even more than they are at wide receiver. Grissom has spent the last two years on defense, and a lot of time trying to recover from injury. It's hard to tell what kind of potential he has, so why not give it a shot?
Recall that Brody Eldridge came to OU as a touted high school defensive end before redshirting and moving over to offense. That worked out OK.
While Favors' move isn't quite as dramatic, it has the potential to pay quick dividends. The Sooners aren't exactly loaded at D-end, and they could use a pass-rushing menace with Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis getting ready for NFL minicamps.
Maybe Favors, a third-year sophomore who was actually more a linebacker/safety combo coming out of high school, becomes that guy. For now, he has put on 13 pounds to help along the transition.
* Speaking of weight changes…
Landry Jones is back at his sophomore playing weight of 218 pounds. He quarterbacked at 229 last year.
Blake Bell has somehow gotten bigger, measuring at 6-6, 254 pounds. Yeah, I'm pretty sure OU isn't scrapping the Dozer anytime soon.
Just about all of the running backs added 6-7 pounds. That includes rehabbing Dom Whaley and Roy Finch, now tipping scales at 175 pounds.
Tyrus Thompson and Lane Johnson, the two linemen vying for the left tackle position, are both at 303 pounds after playing 2011 a shade under 300.
At guard, Gabe Ikard and Adam Shead both lost seven pounds while Tyler Evans went from 304 to 315.
It appears most of the defensive tackles shed weight. Torrea Peterson dropped 15 pounds to get to 277. Marquis Anderson dropped 12 and now weighs in at 265. Jordan Phillips and Jamarkus McFarland also lost, though Phillips is still a 6-6, 318-pound redshirt freshman.
OU defensive ends, in contrast, gained. David King packed on 13 pounds and is now 6-5, 286.
Another 13-pound gainer: safety Tony Jefferson, now listed at 212.
* Only one number change to report
Defensive end R.J. Washington, in an obvious salute to Tinker Owens, went from No. 91 to No. 11.
