Blake Bell admitted he was a little nervous before making his first start as Oklahoma’s quarterback.
“I’ve always been told if you’re not nervous, there’s something wrong,” Bell said. “You always have a little nerves. Other than that, after preparing so much during the week, you feel like you are ready to go out there and play.”
When he ran off the field following the Sooners’ 51-20 victory over Tulsa, he had thrown for 413 yards (setting an OU record for a first-time starter) and four touchdowns. He earned Big 12 offensive player of the week honors for his work.
Things get tougher on Sept. 28 when he takes the field at Notre Dame. He’s looking forward to the challenge to play in South Bend and expects many in his family to attend.
“Being a Catholic boy and going to Notre Dame and playing, that’s always cool too,” Bell said. “It’s going to be a great experience.”
It will be Bell’s 24th game at Oklahoma, but only his second start. Bell said he’ll look back at his experience for support.
“I think being out there last year in some big situations – Notre Dame and Okie State and stuff like that – you feel a little bit of a presence back there,” Bell said. “Obviously, I’m not dropping back and throwing last year. Still, being in those big-game situations, it helps out a little bit.”
