The first trailer for the remake of "RoboCop" has been released, and it actually looks better than anybody thought it would.
After
some set photos surfaced last year, fans were lrft wondering why Daft Punk was suddenly fighting crime in Detroit.
This new trailer, however, redeems some, but not all, of the skepticism.
There are a few things that fans of the old "Robocop" can look forward to. For one thing, it doesn't look like they monkeyed with the story all that much. Still a Detroit cop who is seriously injured and turned into a cyborg fightin' machine. It does look like this version of Murphy retains much more of his original personality. Original Murphy was all-the-way dead, but this one is just fried up, so they are just going to Darth-ify him instead of re-build his brain.
The suit is not as bad as everyone anticipated, and it looks like this version switch out its casings to suit the need of the moment, which is kind of cool in human Lego man kind of a way. And it looks like he starts out much like his predecessor, then progresses to the more sleek version.
We get some nice throwbacks, like the ED-209 staying pretty much true to the original design. Also the gun-in-the-leg thing is nice touch.
The real question here, is weather or not this new version will stay true to the heart of the old one. We can look at the recent disappointment of "Total Recall" to see what not to do. If that movie wasn't a re-make, it would have been fine, but everyone was expecting more camp(and a trip to Mars) because the Arnold Schwarzenegger version was so ingrained into pop culture, even if nobody had watched it in the last 7 years.
The original "Robocop" was a visceral, biting satire on American corporate greed, and we can only hope this one lives up to the challenge. With wonderful shots in the trailer from supporting actors like Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson, it looks like , that this might be the case, but they could also be going for a straight-up action flick, in which case, it will be a big fail whale like "Total Recall" was.
