I just received a friendly press release email reminder this morning from the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) that they will be updating their hurricane outlook this Thursday.
And then, Tropical storm Ernesto becomes Hurricane Ernesto.
According to the Associated Press, Ernesto is headed toward landfall near Mexico's border with Belize, bringing the threat of powerful winds and torrential rains to the Caribbean coast.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Ernesto had winds of 80 mph and was located about 185 miles east of Chetumal, Mexico.
The AP also reports that evacuations have already taken place in Nicaragua and that soldiers and police are moving 600 residents from the fishing village of Punta Allen in Mexico's Quintana Roo state.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Gilma formed in the Pacific Ocean, 620 miles west of Mazanillo, Mexico, with winds of 40 mph, but that storm was not expected to threaten land.
