Lon Kruger has made a living out of rebuilding basketball programs. Yesterday I asked Dick Vitale and Jay Bilas on an ESPN teleconference if Oklahoma should be any different.

Vitale's answer:

"Lon Kruger is one of those guys that's a stabilizer. He can get a program stabilized and then rolling in the right direction. He has such a great feel for understanding how to put a team together, how to get good shots, how to play on the defensive end, how to play as a unit. The guy's been a winner everywhere he's been. He's been a flat-out winner. And he's good people as well. I think he'll represent that school big-time and in a first-class manner. I think that Joe (Castiglione) did a terrific job. I said at the time that was a really magical hire. Because this guy is a bonafide winner.

"He's one of the elite coaches that gets no PR. You never hear his name ever with all the giants. But you ask his peers, he can flat-out coach."

Bilas' follow-up:

"I agree. I'm really interested to see the three new guards that they've got. I think they've got a chance to be an NCAA tournament team this year, because they've got better numbers. Amath M'Baye has a chance to be really good. A lot of people think he's going to be the (Big 12) newcomer of the year

"He doesn't have a team full of stars, but he's got a team full of really good players. I think he does, Lon, a really good job of taking players and blending them together and using their strengths really well. They're gonna guard. They switch. They wind up doing a lot of creative things defensively. I think Oklahoma's going to be really good team and harder out in the Big 12 than they were last year."
