Easiest and most worthwhile gift this season is a book, for anyone of any age.

I’m known as the giver of books in my family.

Reading is the one aspect of my life unchanged from having children.

Working out, cooking elaborate meals, movie watching, band hopping and even sewing have all taken a back seat to the needs of raising my kids.

Reading is the one thing I’ve held onto.

It’s also the one thing I always give as gifts for the holidays.

Finding the right book to fit the interests of a loved one is something I deeply enjoy.

My family are not bookish people, but I’ve managed to find literature for all of them.

Some selections may not be academic.

But entertainment reading can also open up worlds, whether true or fiction.

Syndicated columnist Amy Dickinson , aka “Ask Amy,” pushes the “Book on Every Bed” gift-giving concept this time of year.

It’s an idea focused on children.

Place a wrapped book from “Santa” on a child's bed or where children can find it Christmas morning.

That gift of literacy has untold rewards.

For me, Old Saint Nick does not give book presents.

I want my kids to know their Mom specifically picked out something they might enjoy.

Same goes to my husband, nephews, sister, mom, aunts and uncles.

One day, I might get that groan about a book - like some kids do for sweaters or socks.

It hasn’t happened yet.

For that, I'm thankful.
