WEATHER WORLD
At the cookout I went to Sunday evening, it was tank top, cutoff jean shorts and flip flops. My friend said to me, “you look ...
This blog was inspired by some of our early morning commenters on the weather forecast story .
Yes, as one of you pointed ...
The deluge earlier this month was exciting. For a second, I though that maybe the near-record parched May was just a fluke ...
Has it been a year already? We started this blog on June 9, 2011, right as Oklahoma was beginning its summer drought woes, right after a fairly active spring and a winter with tons of snow days (for students, not for reporters). Together, we and you, our wonderful readers, shared experiences like dry, miserably hot summers, tornadoes, warm winters and sunny days.
In honor of our one-year anniversary, here are a few of our favorite entries:
- June 16, 2011: "Dogs can forecast the weather. Seriously! I asked a vet"
Simon is Althea's "weather dog." Shortly before thunderstorms hit Tulsa, he will walk around the house, panting loudly. I think it was about a month after this entry ran that we discovered that Simon also didn't like earthquakes.
- July 22, 2011: "The radar image might be deceiving you"
This was a favorite because it was educational. TV weather forecasts usually don't show anything for areas without rain, but as the tulsaworld.com/weather radar shows, there's more to radar images than just storms.
- Aug. 3, 2011: "August records are falling like the rain we need"
This blog shows the desperation of last summer and how delirious the heat and drought made us.
- September 1, 2011: "Tulsa hurricane: Just a college mascot, or actual weather event?"
Combining sports and weather makes both more fun, which made this entry especially fun. The blog followed up later in September with three entries on college football games having issues with lightning, complete with photos.
- Dec. 2, 2011: "Bedlam football chance of rain? 100 percent!"
This was one of the most viewed entries of the weather blog in our inaugural year. It will be good to get back to football season. Expect more forecasts for both away and home games!
- Feb. 2, 2012: “More like Punxsu-PHONY Phil, amirite?!”
In this blog, Jerry rants about groundhogs and their inability to predict weather. Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, and we had the warmest March ever. Good one, Phil.
- Feb. 29, 2012: "Leap Day Tornado Outbreak 2012 is rare and deadly"
This was one of the more popular blogs. There were about 45 tornadoes across the southeast on the extra day we had this year.
- March 9, 2012: "Photos of the northern lights. Amazing!"
Of all the weather photo blog entries, this was one of Althea's favorite, possibly because it was right before she left on two months of maternity leave.
- May 21, 2012: “Did you experience the eclipse? Here are some photos”
Jerry got to see part of the first eclipse to cross North America since 1994, which made him a kid again. Here are a bunch of pictures, including some he took.
- June 12, 2012: "Weather suggests Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami Heat nicknames should be reversed"
Is it cheating to including yesterday's entry in this list? If not, this was a fun entry because we're usually asking government agency weather personnel about forecasts, not basketball. So, they probably had fun with this topic, too.
