Webster pulled off one of this area’s most stunning regular-season boys basketball upsets in this decade on Tuesday night with a 60-57 victory at Booker T. Washington.

It is the biggest win of this century for the Class 4A Warriors, who shocked one of the teams favored to contend for the 6A state title. The Hornets, 22-4 last season, won the 5A gold ball in 2010 and ‘11.

Kortney Smith scored 21 points to lead Webster (2-1). He was so excited about the victory that he was sick when he awakened on Wednesday morning.

“I had a headache and my stomach was upset,” Smith said. “I think it was from all the jumping around and screaming I did after the game. I ran all over the place when the game was over.”

Smith said he told Webster coach Scott Bowman before the game that “we’re going to give Booker T. a run for their money.”

Webster’s Anthony Wilson added 17 points. Bowman credited Wilson for a strong defensive effort on 2011 state player of the year and Georgia signee Juwan Parker, who scored 37 points. Parker rallied the Hornets from a halftime deficit to tie the game at 50 going into the fourth quarter, but they could only score seven points in the final eight minutes.

“He got on fire in the third quarter but then we ran a triangle-and-two on him and got in his face, and kept the ball away from him,” Bowman said.

It was the season opener for the Hornets. Last season, the Hornets beat Webster 94-44 and 68-44.

“We made a big statement,” Wilson said. “This is a big step. We’re all pretty excited. Nobody else expected this but we believed we could do it.”

Smith made 1-of-2 free throws with four seconds left and Parker missed a 40-foot shot at the buzzer.

“Those last four seconds seemed like they took hours,” said Smith, who grabbed a big offensive rebound with 14 seconds left.

Webster was 8-19 last season primarily playing 5A teams, but went 3-2 in the playoffs to show potential for this season.

“We’re hoping this can be a springboard for us,” Bowman said.
