A friend who is a teacher forwarded on a piece from the Los Angeles Times about Tony Danza learning that teaching is a lot harder than he ever imagined.

You remember Tony Danza, right? "Taxi," "Who's the Boss?" "The Tony Danza Show"....

TD has been working as a first-year English teacher at a Philadelphia high school for six months for an A&E reality show called "Teach."

The story says: "During his first week in the classroom,Danza said that he cried three times and was corrected by a student during a lecture when he `didn't get his facts quite right.'

"At the end of the week, Danza `felt like calling every teacher he'd ever had and apologizing because he just didn't get how difficult their jobs were.'"

My friend's apt comment on the story was, "It's not as easy as it looks."

I'd add that it doesn't even look easy.

I trained for the Tulsa Public Schools volunteer substitute teaching program earlier this year, intending to write about the experience, but after our news department wrote two strong stories from the perspectives of volunteer substitutes, I decided I didn't have anything new to bring to the story.

There was probably an element of cowardice in that decision too, although I doubt I'd have ended up weeping like a Danza.
