Sick of the 100s? Wake up earlier, Oklahoma! Here are Wednesday morning's temperatures across the state from the Oklahoma Mesonet (as of 7:15 a.m.)

You might have noticed our Tulsa World front page now regularly has weather updates, including the previous day's high and low temperatures and forecasted high for the current day. If not, you should totally check our e-Edition here.

As one of the staffers tracking down these numbers from the National Weather Service, I have noticed something very cool that's provided by the NWS that I didn't before:

The time when these highs and lows are achieved each day.

This is very useful information! When is the best time to be outdoors to get the coolest temperatures you can? When are the best times to avoid outdoor activities? What time is that sprinkler that is raising your water bill the most efficient and effective?

First, the daily highs and the times they were achieved:

And here are the lows, along with the times they were achieved:

If our consistently dry and hot weather is good for anything, it's showing that typically, the day's hottest temps come during the mid to late afternoon, while the day's lowest temperatures come around sunrise, good news for early bloomers, bad news for those that sleep in.

Why is this? I asked Tulsa National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Sellers, and he said it was "strictly related to the sun angle." Sunlight is the most intense in the afternoon, hence the hottest temperatures, while having overnight to cool down leads to the cooler morning temperatures.

Just another reason to set that alarm clock and those sprinklers a little bit earlier, regardless of water rationing rules.
