For state college football fans, Oklahoma State vs. Mississippi State figures to be the marquee game of the first Saturday.

Even Louisiana-Monroe's visit to Memorial Stadium on Aug. 31 to face Oklahoma should feature a little intrigue.

But if you have time that Saturday night, you should probably tune into ESPN at 8 for TCU-LSU at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. That one figures to be interesting even beyond the local connections. It could get personal.

If you haven't heard the story, let me help you out.

LSU reinstated running back Jeremy Hill to the team earlier this week after he wasn't given jail time for a probation violation. He violated his probation by pleading guilty to simple battery after punching someone outside a bar in April. He was on probation for a 2012 case in which he plead guilty to carnal knowledge of a minor.

No, really, I'm not making any of that up.

(You can read the full story here from our friends at the Baton Rouge Advocate).

Anyway, when former OSU coach Les Miles talked about letting Hill back on the team, he said the running back's Tiger teammates held a vote.

That bit of democratic justice didn't sit too well with TCU coach Gary Patterson, who is benching sophomore defensive stud Devonte Fields for two games for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

(You can see the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's story on the topic here).

"My whole team would vote Devonte to be back on the team because they all want to win," Patterson told the Star-Telegram. "That doesn’t teach life lessons."

It may not, but it should make for a little extra drama on the first Saturday of the college football season.
