Randy's Muffler & Brake on 21st Street near Memorial Drive in Tulsa was damaged during a storm Saturday. CHRISTOPHER SMITH / Tulsa World
On Friday, I
mentioned there was a slight chance of rain forecast for many of the coming days. Well, we got it.
And a lot more.
Severe thunderstorms rolled through Tulsa
Saturday afternoon, knocking out power to more than 19,000 customers at one point in Tulsa County.
Strong winds blew down power lines, tree branches and the stage at the
Brady Block Party.
Looking at the National Weather Service
storm reports, the damage included some hail, but mainly wind, including a wind gust of 63 mph at Jones Jr. Riverside Airport.
The airport also recorded a rainfall total of...drumroll please...
1.14 inches! No, really! I know!
Tulsa International Airport had 0.75 inches of rain in its rain gauge after the storms blew through. More than twice the amount of rain that fell in all of July fell in a single glorious afternoon at TIA.
The last time TIA got more than 0.75 inches of rain was on May 24, when 0.83 inches fell.
Also at TIA, the temperature fell from the daily record-tying 109 degrees to 75 by 8 p.m. That's lower than most of the low temperatures over the past few weeks!
Tulsa will likely see more rain before the week is out, which is very exciting.
Forecasters are calling for a 40 percent chance Monday night. However, it's not time to break out the sweaters yet. High will be in the 100s most of this week, until the weekend, when temperatures are forecast to fall into the mid-90s.
I have no idea how I'm going to handle it if that comes true.
