The latest controversy in the presidential race is: A) the resolution of two wars; B) the sinking economy; C) how to wean the country from its dependency on foreign oil; D) how to make sure every American has dependable health care; E) none of the above?
Answer: E, none of the above.
That's right, none of the above. The big topic as of Tuesday afternoon was which team Sen. Barack Obama really supports in the upcoming World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays.
According to Sen. John McCain, Obama said while campaigning in Philadelphia that he is a Phillies fan. McCain then said that Obama seemed to support the Rays while campaigning in Florida.
McCain says it is more evidence that Obama can't make a decision.
First, would someone please ask Sen. McCain which team he is rooting for in the Series? Come on, senator, pick one. Would it be the Rays. It is a Florida-based team and that state holds 27 electoral votes. Or the Phillies, based in Pennsylvania with 21 electoral votes.?
Is this really an issue in a presidential race? Sure, it makes everyone feel good when some bigshot endorses the home team. But can it really sway votes? Well, maybe in Philadelphia.
The answer for any candidate is simply: "I love baseball and think both teams are deserving of their place in the championship. I wish them both well and may the best team win."
Believe me, no one outside of Pennsylvania and Florida cares much about who wins the World Series.
Besides, do candidates think that the American voters are so simple and stupid that they would base their selection of the next leader of the free world on who the candidate wants to win the World Series?
Unfortunately, I think I know the answer to that.
