Why Bob Stoops needs this one against Texas Tech badly

Oklahoma's last visit to Texas Tech didn't go well at all. The Sooners were drubbed 41-13. The next day Thayer Evans noticed OU's 6-5 record and wrote this in the New York Times: "Oklahoma is sinking towards a new low during the Bob Stoops era."

Now, I sort of think OU will win in Lubbock this weekend. But say that doesn't happen. If the Sooners lose, consider a few things...

* Stoops would be 2-2, just like in 2009 and '05, the two seasons he had to play a freshman quarterback. OU's quarterback this year is a senior.

* Stoops would be 0-2 in the Big 12 Conference for the first time. Even his first OU squad began league play 1-1.

* Stoops will have dropped back-to-back games in the same season for the firs time since 2003. That year, the Sooners closed by losing to Kansas State and LSU.

* Stoops' record over his last five Big 12 games would sink to 1-4. The same coach who has lorded over the league with those seven championships will have won one of his last five in conference.

* Stoops' record against Texas Tech would dip to 8-6 overall and 3-5 since 2005. Three and five? Against Tech? That's nuts.

Which explains why I have this hunch Stoops will come out swinging Saturday. The coach and his players.

There are a lot of unpleasant opinions being slung around the whole lot of them right now. Those numbers above? No opinion in any of them. I can't imagine anyone in OU's program would want to wake up to them Sunday morning.

If that happens, if the Sooners do fall, we might call Mr. Evans over at Sports Illustrated. Just to see if he might reconsider a new "new low."
