Prince.

Herb Alpert.
Yup,
mashups: Twice the music, half the space.
Leading into this weekend, for some reason, I'm stuck on music mashups.
Yesterday, I reconnected with a long-ago high school friend, if you can call him that.
Curt Gooch, who co-authored "
KISS Alive Forever: The Complete Touring History," and the new book "
And Party Every Day: Casablanca Records Story," and I talked about our school days together in
Edmond.
He rode in the back of the bus -- long-haired, sullen, rabble-roused and appropriately KISS-obsessed. I rode in the front -- clarinet case in hand and quietly preoccupied with
Jim Morrison,
Brian May and
Jimmy Page while also taking jazz, tap and ballet classes that focused on
Paula Abdul and
Sly & the Family Stone tunes.
He reminded me of "that one time," in high school, when he and a friend angrily left their own party because someone had the audacity to play "non-music rap crap" by
Run-DMC.
We both laughed. "
Rick Rubin went on to 'save'
Metallica," he said. The producer that paired Run-DMC with
Aerosmith for "
Walk this Way" has gone on do work with some of the most famous acts in modern music history.
Ah, hindsight.
