The Shock has not given Tulsa a reason to embrace the WNBA and it was dealt another setback on Tuesday.
Liz Cambage, Tulsa’s best player, said she will not come back to to play the remainder of the WNBA season.
Cambage is claiming she is too tired after leading Australia to a Bronze medal in the Olympics. Also, she recently signed to play in China starting later this fall.
Whatever the real reason, the Cambage decision is yet another blow to the Shock’s hopes of building aa WNBA fan base in Oklahoma.
So, the Shock, the worst team in the WNBA since the team arrived in Tulsa, will finish this season without its best player.
We don’t know if the WNBA ever had a future in Tulsa or not.
However, it is hard to blame Tulsa for not embracing a team that continually disappoints what few fans it does have in Oklahoma.
The Cambage decision is devastating for a franchise that was trying desperately to gain some sort of foothold in Tulsa.
Instead, the Shock is probably once again doomed to the worst record in the league.
The only hope for the Shock is winning the WNBA’s lottery to get Baylor’s Brittney Griner next spring.
Now, if we’re talking Griner and Cambage, a female version of the Houston Rockets’ twin towers (Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon), that gives folks a reason to come out and watch.
It is about time the Shock gets some good news.
