Tulsan Will Hedgecock will be featured in a special online broadcast from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., as one of nine recipients of the center’s 2013 VSA Playwright Discovery Award.

Excerpts from the plays of each of the nine winners –– including Hedgecock’s play, “Bad Day” –– will be broadcast live beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday, as part of the Kennedy Center’s Page-to-Stage Festival.

The event can be viewed here.

The VSA Playwright Discovery Program is an annual competition for middle and high school students with and without disabilities to examine the disability experience and express their views through the art of script writing.

Hedgecock, 17, is a senior at Tulsa’s Edison High School, who edits the school’s literary magazine, has earned regional and state awards for his acting, and is an Eagle Scout. He recently directed a production of his own one-act play, “Mir(and)a,” as a fund-raiser for the Edison theater program.

Hedgecock is the second member of his family to be recognized as a playwright by the Kennedy Center. His sister, Emily, was the sole winner of the 2011 program for her play “Hand Speak,” which was given a fully staged production at the Kennedy Center.
