Zanmai, an upscale Japanese steakhouse, hibachi grill and sushi bar, opened with a limited menu Thursday night at 1402 S. Peoria Ave.

The second-floor restaurant with spectacular views of the downtown skyline is operating only the hibachi grill stations, sushi bar and lounge.

“The steakhouse will start in maybe two weeks, maybe more,” said owner Nobu Terauchi, who also owns two Fuji Japanese restaurants in Tulsa.
“We will start lunch in a few weeks, too.”

Zanmai has a long sushi menu with prices ranging from $4.50 to $28. Combos, bento boxes and party boats also are available.

A variety of seafood and meat is available on the hibachi grill menu, with entrees ranging from $12 to $48. Entrees for ages 9 and under are $8 to $12. Desserts, such as banana split egg rolls and mango mousse cake, are $5 to $7. The restaurant also has a full bar menu.

Zanmai is operating 5-10 p.m. seven days a week. Reservations for hibachi grill stations, where the chefs put on a show with their knifework, can be made at 918-556-0200.

The restaurant has 16 hibachi-style cooking stations. One room that can be closed off for private functions has two stations and space for 16.

In addition to the private room, the 9,000-square-foot restaurant has a large room for the string of hibachi grills, a sushi bar and a smaller dining room and patio for the steakhouse.

“It has been more than three years since this project started, and I’m so happy to get the restaurant open,” Terauchi said.

Terauchi introduced Tulsans to sushi in 1986 at his first Fuji restaurant near 71st Street and Memorial Drive. He added a Fuji restaurant in Brookside in 2005.

Best known as Chef Nobu, he also has been a popular cooking class instructor for many years.
