The shelves are emptier than normal at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
I was at the
Food Bank recently after some nagging from a friend to accompany her on a volunteer trip. And I can’t say I’m sorry I gave in to her nagging, because it was a good experience.
A group of TCC students were also there to help for the first time, and I went along with them on a tour of the facility, which the food bank moved into in 2006.
Inside the warehouse, the director of volunteer services worriedly pointed out several empty shelves, and said the state of the economy has affected the amount of donations they are receiving. The organization relies on donations, as well as volunteers. Although the dip in donations is understandable, there is no reason the organization should have to worry about volunteers.
So choose a weekend, grab a buddy (or group of buddies), and head out to the facility, at 1304 N. Kenosha Ave. Volunteers are needed to sort and repackage food, help in the culinary center, fill backpacks for the Food for Kids program, and help with bulk mailings, among other things. And you could even take your kids (as young as age 8), if you want to give them a lesson in community service.

Volunteer shifts usually only last a few hours, so you can still enjoy the rest of the day doing whatever you like, with the added bonus of feeling good about helping out an organization that takes care of those in need.
