A Cure for Pac-Man Fever

The media wasted far too much ink and far too much breath talking about the likes of Pac-Man Jones, recently banned from the NFL for bad behavior.
We could have been writing or talking about a guy like Will Shields, who is one of the NFL's all-time good guys.
Shields, a Lawton native, was a recipient of the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award a couple of years ago. I drove to Kansas City to spend the day with him and take a tour of the many places that benefit from his Will to Succeed Foundation. He got so many hugs everywhere he went that you would have thought the guy was Santa Claus, another plus-sized man who wears red.
I remember that Shields cell phone played "Lean on Me" when it rang and a lot of people do lean on him in Kansas City. The Chiefs can't lean on him anymore because he announced his retirement. He did good work on the field and should be a lock for the hall of fame, but he does better work off the field and he should be recognized for it.
The media gives headlines to bad guys because we assume people like to read about bad news and controversy. Is that true? Does anybody like to read about the good guys?

He graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern State University with a journalism degree and, while attending college, was sports editor of the Pryor Daily Times.
