Since 1895, the University of Oklahoma has played 1,160 football games.
Since 1901, Oklahoma State University has played 1,081 football games.
As the Sooners and Cowboys prepare for huge contests this weekend – OU at Missouri, OSU vs. Nebraska – Oklahomans can savor an unprecedented milestone achieved by the state teams.
For the first time ever, the Sooners and Cowboys both are off to a 6-0 start.
Before this season, OU had been 6-0 in 20 seasons. OSU had been 6-0 three times (1945, 1997, 2008). But to simultaneously have a 6-0 squad in Norman and a 6-0 squad in Stillwater – it’s a first.
If both teams are 7-0 next week, they will have recorded significant victories on Saturday. The Sooners, No. 1 in the first BCS standings, visit Missouri for a 7 p.m. showdown. And in what likely will be its final visit to Stillwater, Nebraska is Oklahoma State’s 2:30 p.m. homecoming opponent.
Both games are televised by ABC. It’s a spectacular Saturday for state football fans.
If the Sooners and Cowboys prevail this week, they will have taken significant steps toward something that would be unimaginably cool – a Nov. 27 Bedlam battle pitting unbeaten OU against unbeaten OSU.
