A little sliver of March Madness returns to Tulsa

With all the excitement surrounding the Thunder, you might have missed another bit of good basketball news for Tulsa that happened this week.

The Conference USA Basketball Tournament returns to town next March, with the men's event taking place at the BOK Center and the women's tournament across the street at the Tulsa Convention Center (Click here to read Bill Haisten's story).

The tournament was last in town in 2010, with Houston earning the league's automatic NCAA bid by beating Texas-El Paso in the finals.

No matter the outcome of the 2013 tournament, there really isn't anything bad from a Tulsa prospective about hosting the event. It's always exciting to have a close connection to March Madness. And there might be a little extra emphasis on this tournament since it's the last for Memphis before it bolts to the Big East (the reason C-USA moved the tournament from Memphis to Tulsa).

The BOK Center is a great building and anything that showcases it for future sporting events is a good thing.

There is a little bad news, though.

One reason the tournament is headed to Tulsa is no one in Conference USA thinks Danny Manning's first Golden Hurricane team will be good enough to use this home court advantage.

As I've mentioned before, due to graduations, transfers or other issues, Tulsa could be without 73 percent of its scoring from the 2011-12 team. Manning's first season as Golden Hurricane coach has all the makings of a rough one.

But with this week's announcement, there's already one good reason to keep an eye on the finish line.
