A valid question amid OU's heartbreak

Interesting exchange after Nebraska's 59-58 escape of Oklahoma Wednesday night at the Lloyd Noble Center.

No Sooners who spoke to reporters afterward – meaning Jeff Capel, Cade Davis and Andrew Fitzgerald – questioned the officials' decision to award Davis 2 for what originally appeared to be a game-tying 3 with 3 seconds left in regulation. It was futile to do so, given that replay clearly showed Davis' right foot touching the 3-point line.

Still, Oklahoma City TV/radio personality Toby Rowland raised a worthy point to Capel: "Should there be some kind of rule revisitation there about when you check the (replay)? Everybody on the court looked confused."

The Huskers were so certain Davis' shot was a 3 that they inbounded and hurried the ball upcourt for a running heave at the buzzer, a shot that Lance Jeter back-ironed to set up what appeared to be overtime.

In the process, none of the Sooners thought to foul and put a Husker on the free throw line. They thought Davis' 3 had tied the score. Fouling under that circumstance was the last thing they wanted to do.

But had officials Tom Eades, Randy Heimerman and Bert Smith gone to the replay immediately following Davis' shot...

"I've never thought about it. That's a really good question," Capel said to Rowland. "It would help. It certainly would help. But with how fast the game is, I don't know if that could happen. But it definitely would help."

"At least we're not Nebraska" Methinks capel would give up his first born to be as good as the corn aggies. BTW Emigh, you dolt, Davis' foot was clearly over the line. When are you going to just admit that the dirt burglars just suck? Your homerism is nauseating. Typical gooner homerism.

BTW guerin, my boy, I'm guessing the corn aggies are saying "At least we're not oklahoma" tonight. That's gonna leave a mark.

Close calls happen all of the time in the NCAA and usually on more meaningful games.

Capel played ball at Duke, he should know first hand from a players point of view.

kcc12, you Dolt Guerin is an OU beat writer, I would expect him to be an OU homer. BTW, he states in the article Davis' foot was on the line and should have been a 2 point basket.

You cannot interrupt a game while play is ongoing/transitioning in order to go to replay. Are you going to stop a team in the middle of a fast break to go to the monitor? Wow, could that cause some controversies? Both teams need to be aware of the ref's call on the floor and continue play based on that. Upon a break in play you go to replay. If the refs got the call right and both teams played based on the refs call (like they should have) it's as if nothing ever happened. If the ref has to correct a call, you should rewind the clock and pick up play from the point where the call is corrected.

They let one slip away but it was a great effort.

59-58 in a late-February Big 12 Conference game? I would hardly call that a great effort...

The refs knew it was a two and clearly called it as such. Why on earth would they stop to review? His toe wasn't just on the line, it was over it. It was obvious.

Just shows that Capel is in over his head - or has just given up. Its time for him to go. This team looked like they were getting better during the 4 game winstreask but against OSU and MIzzou that blew leads and looked terrible. You don't peak in January if your team is growing and progressing.

A better player might not have stepped on the line.
Weak afterthought.
But good blog question. LOL

After some over-the-top hatefulness I was party to from a bunch of gooners during last season's ou win over Texas in Norman at the LNC, I came in here to give ou a little grief but I can see that enough people are already doing so with enthusiasm ... gleefully even. I have to say that I almost feel bad for ou this season ... beat twice by Texas (Hook'em!), lost Bedlam (Go Pokes!) and now losing to little red (those running-away-with-their-tails-between-their-legs crybabies) ... but notice I said "almost." I'll just leave here without repeating any Red River Shootout T-shirt idioms that certainly seem applicable. Hmm, I guess I CAN show compassion to my enemy. Almost feels wrong somehow, though.

Sooners are only unhappy with calls that go against them. Like Barry SWitzer said after the Oregon game, "hey, we've had some calls really go our way and we didn't mind".

Who really cares--it's only basketball....just don't let the same mistake happen in a football game!!!!!!

I'm a Sooner fanatic...and couldn't disagree more with the assertion that this should have been reviewed. The officials made a clear indication of a correct call. This suggestion is a waste of everyone's time and energy.
