After soliciting NFL draft information, Watts staying at TU

From University of Tulsa football coach Bill Blankenship: After soliciting an evaluation from the NFL Draft Advisory Board, junior running back Trey Watts conveyed to Blankenship that he has decided to stay with the Golden Hurricane for his senior season in 2013.

Voted the Liberty Bowl MVP after rushing for 149 yards during TU’s 31-17 victory over Iowa State, Watts is a durable playmaker and the most versatile player in the Hurricane program. His value cannot be overstated. Among Tulsa’s running backs and receivers, Watts by far had the most touches of the football – 264 – during the 2012 season.

The 5-foot-11 Watts led TU in carries (186) and rushing yards (1,108) while also totaling 34 receptions, 22 punt returns and 21 kickoff returns. Alex Singleton had 205 touches. Ja’Terian Douglas had 138. Keyarris Garrett had 67 and Willie Carter had 63.

At 245.7 yards per game, TU ranked ninth nationally in rushing offense. Singleton had a sensational senior season, running for 818 yards and 24 touchdowns. The 260-pound tailback became TU’s single-season record-holder for rushing TDs (24) and career record-holder for rushing TDs (43) and overall TDs (44).

Watts and Douglas combined for 2,044 rushing yards in 2012. When they enter the 2013 season as seniors, their career combined yardage total amounts to 4,420.

Trey Watts - a likely drafted running back??? He should be happy if he is even invited to a try-out camp.

Really good college running back. Quick, shifty, can make defenders miss, etc. His big liability, overall speed. A couple of times this year he was run down from behind by defenders. Doesn't seen to have overall speed for NFL. Glad he's coming back I love watching him and that punt return against UCF was a candidate for play of the year.

Speed isn't always important in the NFL. Washington had an all pro season by Alfred Morris their starter ran a 4.7 40 time at the combine. Not exactly track speed.

Trey Watts will not play in the NFL. He is serviceable in college, but he really should not be getting Ja'Terrian Douglas' carries.

I don't want to sound anti-Trey because he's a great kid and a nice player, but there's zero doubt that Douglas is the better of the two backs.

I disagree 100%. Trey is without question the most versatile of all the backs. JT is a home run hitter but he doesn't run between the tackles nearly as effectively as Trey. He does not have the same knack for inside zone runs. Trey does. JT is most effective on the edge, like you saw against ISU. Trey is also a much better reciever out of the backfield and better in blitz pickup. Much harder to gameplan for a back like Trey than JT. It's not even close IMO

Great news to hear Trey is coming back ! He is a role model for younger kids. Here is a guy who was a walk-on athlete, that made himself stronger & faster each season. He has turned himself into an all conference player & Liberty Bowl MVP.

I think regardless if he makes the NFL or not, he will be a success in life. He has shown he has the drive to succeed. BTW, I would not bet against him making an NFL roster. He really is much faster & stronger than when he arrived at TU. This gives him one more season to get stronger & faster yet !
