Aggie High

Anybody interested in an update of where option football stands in the contemporary college game has to look no farther than Texas A&M: Option football is standing still.

Running what amounts to mini-wishbone versus a Miami team that OU squashed, Texas A&M embarrassed the heartland, the Big 12 Conference, the great state of Texas, Aggies, collies, former ROTC students, and Podunk High, which runs the option better.

There are so many reasons why the option won't work against good defenses, we'll simply refer you to pieces correctly proclaiming the option's demise in the late 1980's.

If you can't pass, you can't defend the pass; the strategy of risking the quarterback's limbs is foolhardy on all levels.

What is coach Fran writing on the sideline as his quarterback is being used as a wishbone?

A job application?

Credit where it's due, I say, and I certainly do remember your denigrating the 'bone back when you were the Tribune picker. You were right then and you're right today. A&M embarrassed themselves on a variety of levels. Franny apparently never saw or heard of the destruction of OU's mighty wishbone in the mid-eighties. As he threw a poor-sister's version of it at a mediocre Miami team last night it alluded him that the guy at the helm, Randy Shannon, was part and parcel of the defenses that dismantled it back then. Embarrassing for the conference (not that the conference has much honor to defend these days) and for the state of Texas (sorry, but I'll exclude the 'great' in that comment), and, humerously, embarrassing for collies everywhere. Alabama fans are going to be wallowing in schadenfreude come December when Franchione is given his pink slip.

We didn't work for the Chicago Tribune. We threw a route once, that's all.

WSMITH: You sent me to the dictionary for "schadenfreude." Who says this blog isn't educational?
WSmith (5 years ago)
hmmm...yup...I meant the Tulsa Tribune...

Nora...attagirl. So now you can educate me. What the heck was I talking about?

Mr. Picker. Those of us who wnet to Podunk High resent very much being used as a comparison when something goes awry or involves "Aggies". Please stop doing that. Its a small school but there are those of us who love it.

Sorry Gene.
I thought you went to New Podunk.

On Podunk, On PHS... on to victory! Wake up the echoes, etc...etc...

Looks like Vegas had the OSU Tech game pretty close. Hope has now been restored for this Poke fan, as long as we are playing at home. I will no longer dis Gundy. Orange Power!

Have you actually READ the Carlson article? If her facts were vetted (and it appeared as though they were), she was perfectly correct in her comments. Reid is in a high-visibility situation; along with praise comes criticism, when due. Gundy would be better advised to direct a bit of that passion towards his team, on the sidelines, on Saturdays.

WSMITH, you do know alot about TU. But nothing about the Carlson article. She had no facts and all speculation. Since her article, wrote in third person as Tony Lindseys knee she has been a joke!! I'm still not sure if Gundy is the right man to lead OSU, but I am behind him 100% on his actions at the press conference. And from the applause he got from the other reporters, they also must think Carlson is a joke.

And yes, I read the article several time because I couldn't believe a major newspaper would print that trash.

Incredible buffoonery. I, too, read the article and I don't know how anyone can say it was contrived. Read any sports article you'd like...the great majority report facts the same way (i.e. it isn't necessary to quote every fact you report, never has been, never will be...it's unreasonable; nor is is always necessary - or ethical - to cite a quoted source). A great deal of what she reported was indeed third person but a good deal of it was also personal observation (she was there...were you?). Stop looking at the Aggies through your Elmer Fudd (Boone Pickens) colored glasses and be fair.

There's only one coach in the pathetic Big 12 who's possibly in over his head further than Gunday, and that's Callahan. Both should be dismissed.

Stick to your pathetic Conference USA teams Smith

Ben...go back to sleep.
