All-College is a Classic

The All-College Classic is billed as the oldest basketball tournament on earth.
For starters, it is no longer a real tournament. It is a doubleheader, usually headlined by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Yet, it remains one of the great college basketball holiday traditions.
Tulsa should do whatever it can to lure OU and OSU to play a doubleheader at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
The Sooners and Cowboys are a terrific draw in Tulsa, and always have been, because OU and OSU seldom play athletic events in Tulsa.
Yet, there are more OSU alums in the Tulsa metro area than anywhere else. Tulsa's OU alumni base is second only to Oklahoma City.
And, unlike Oklahoma City, Tulsa seldom gets a chance to see the Sooners and Cowboys in action.
Oklahoma City has the All-College. It has NCAA Tournaments. It has the Big 12 basketball tournaments. It has the Big 12 baseball and softball tournaments. It has Norman just 20 miles down the road.
So, the Tulsa Sports Commission should do everything possible to lure OU and OSU to the BOK Center.
If you think Elton John and Billy Joel are a big pairing, let us assure OU and OSU would fill the place, too.

Great idea. But, we should also be trying to get NCAA Regionals and the Big XII basketaball tournament as well. Don't just concede those to OKC.

We probably never had a chance to get the Big XII baseball tournament, but we'll have no chance with our new mini-stadium after 2010.

Tulsa has no chance of landing an NCAA Regional or the Big 12 basketball tournament until there are more hotel rooms (a LOT more) near the arena. Look at all of the hotel rooms available in the area immediately surrounding the Ford Center now. OKC got the right idea. Now Tulsa needs to themselves.

This is a great idea! Let's get the 4 big schools playing. OSU, ORU, TU, and OU.

It's a no brainer people....4 team tournament.

Matthew, you may be right. But there are plenty of hotel rooms within 15 minutes of the arena. We would only need rooms in the immediate area of the arena for the 4 teams in a regional and their traveling parties. Either the Doubletree or Adams Mark can handle that easily.

The All-College tournament was a lot bigger back in the day (think 20 years ago). These days, its a haphazard group of subpar teams that no one wants to particularly see. Why replicate that?
