All quiet on this day

Monday was Mike Gundy's weekly press conference. The Oklahoma State coach was calm and collected during the 12-plus minutes he stood at the podium and answered questions from various media members in attendance to get his thoughts and insights to this week's game against Troy.

For his sake, none of the questions addressed to Gundy were about the anniversary of his infamous press conference. It was exactly one year Monday (Sept. 22, 2007) where the OSU coach spent exactly three minutes and 30 seconds talking not about the thrilling 49-45 win his team had just pulled off against Texas Tech, but rather an article he deemed as "garbage" that appeared in the Oklahoma City newspaper that day.

Gundy has stated he's moved past the vicious diatribe following the Sept. 22, 2007 victory. Still, the perception of the OSU head coach outside the state and Big 12 Conference region is from the venom he unleashed in that press conference one year ago.

Perception can be fickle at times. Gundy has upgraded the talent level in his four seasons as head coach. Yet, a pair of 7-6 seasons is the best record his teams have recorded.

Will Gundy's legacy as OSU head coach be that of a leader of young men on and off the field and his win-loss record or for a three-minute plus rant splattered all over YouTube.com?

I'm a Ph.D. student at the UofA and even as close as here the entire school is best known for Gundy's rant. I hope that changes. The next most frequent thing people ask me is about T. Boone. Nevertheless, I doubt Mike Gundy will reach as many non-sports people as he did with the OSU logos as his back screaming at Jenni Carlson.

Why do you guys keep bringing it up? Just move on and find some real news for us.
Eric Weathers (4 years ago)
The reason that people in the media keep bringing it up is because the people in the media can't get over it themselves. Normally, I would take up for the people in the media. This is especially true in cases where they get grief /pressure from politicians when they used to do truely valuable investigative journalism. However, the media's response to the Gundy story was nothing less than petty and vindictive. There were only a handful of thoughtful articles written compared to the mountain of bombastic crap. The one point that did come out of the story was just how biased the media is.

Matt, the only way he will ever achieve recognition for anything he does great in the future is if you and the media in general actually LET THE "RANT" GO. Is there some reason why we keep reliving this topic? On October 22nd will we be subjected to a "One year and one month anniversary" article written on this topic? How about next year? How possible is a two year anniversary story? It's pathetic. Seriously. Press in this country is the reality people perceive. The public will move on when the media decides to cover anything that actually pertains to present day matters.

Here we go again. Why don't you do some serious reporting on this year's football team? I really want to know about the Cowboys. How will Mike's so-called "rant" affect Troy? Will it inspire them? Will it keep the D-line from getting a sack? Will the ghost of Jenni Carlson block a punt, or trip a running back? Quit wasting your space and my time. Oh, and Mike Gundy's legacy will be set the way all football coaches legacies are set: won-loss records, big wins, longevity.

It's real simple why people keep talking about Gundy's rant: It's the most interesting thing that's ever come out of his mouth. Perhaps if he had something interesting to say or a big win to discuss, people might think differently. But as long as he stays the dullest coach in the country and his team continues to hover around mediocrity- 'The Rant' will never die. I, for one, hope it stays around forever as it's one of the better ones.

Geez Cyko, I'm not sure how much further you could have been off the mark. Any rant, coming out of any coach's mouth, would be the most interesting thing they ever said. The reason is simple; we live in a negative press world. Hardly anyone ever becomes famous (or infamous) for a positive speech they have given. In fact, for every 1 positive speech ever given in sports, I guarantee there are at least 15 "rants" replayed over and over again because networks LOVE shock value.

By the way, if you think he is the dullest coach in the country, you really need to get out more. Even here in Oklahoma he is a lot more lighthearted and jokes with the media during press conferences more than, "The media is my Enemy," Bob Stoops.

How about describing the Jenni Carlson "article" as a vicious diatribe against Bobby Reid. It was garbage and the editor who let it get in his paper was garbage. I think Mike pretty much nailed it.

Arthur: the only people that did not agree with Coach Gundy were the Media People. Please go back and check the polls taken after he responded to the article in the Oklahoman. For a PHD Candidate, you should know that Coaches and Fans all supported Coach Gundy. As my Doctor Brother in Law says, Some PHD's stand for "Piled Higher and Deeper". Being out in Arizona, very little was mentioned about his response, or even the Oklahoman's Article. Forget hell, never. I hope your PHD is from Alabama, Alaska, or Arizona as they have a good name.

It's been a year, I guess he's even more a man now.

And with every immature post Tulsa Guy, you get closer and closer to becoming "Tulsa Girl."

I just read this blog, and hopefully Matt Doyle will read this. Why not call it the anniversary of the most unprofessional piece of sh#t article ever written. I can’t believe that that b##ch is still employed. You writers disgust me in the way you form ranks behind someone who was obviously in the wrong and should have been fired along with the editor that ran the story. All you all do is write negative things about Gundy in an attempt to take the heat off of her. Shame on all of you. If you think that I’m defending that arrogant son of a b##ch just because he’s coach at OSU, you’re wrong. This comes from someone who went to school with him, doesn’t like him, and probably would have kicked his a## in college if he didn’t cart the offensive line around with him like a bunch of bodyguards all of the time. However, in this case he was right. You are all wrong.
