Amid family tragedy, Scott Sutton expresses appreciation for support

Patsy Sutton, wife of former basketball coach Eddie Sutton and mother of Oral Roberts basketball coaches Scott Sutton and Sean Sutton, has been hospitalized since suffering a major stroke Dec. 28.

Scott Sutton, ORU’s head coach, flew to New Orleans on Thursday so he could join his team for a Southland Conference opener at Southeastern Louisiana. During a pre-game radio show, Sutton was asked by ORU broadcaster Geoff Haxton if he would like to comment on the outpouring of support the Suttons have received since tragedy struck.

“It has been a difficult last several days, but I know I speak for all of my family that we really appreciate all the support and love and concern and most importantly all the prayers that have gone toward my mom and toward us,” he said.

“We are hoping for a miracle. We know that God can heal and that’s what we are hoping and praying for.”

Sean and Scott Sutton have been with their family since their mother’s stroke. Sean, a Golden Eagle assistant coach, remained in Tulsa instead of making the trip to Louisiana. Duties that ordinarily would have been handled by them were assumed by others in the program.

“Thankfully I have a very supporting and strong and capable staff that has been able to handle a lot of responsibilties,” Scott Sutton said. “Sean and I have been away and I certainly appreciate them and (athletic director) Mike Carter and all the support that he has given us.”

Because of the situation, Scott Sutton indicated he found himself facing an opponent that he hasn’t seen on tape. And that’s a first in his career. Said the coach, “I trusted Kyan (Brown to do it) and I know he has done a great job getting these guys prepared.”
