An ESPN triple play

Across my desk this afternoon, a triple play from the four-letter network.

Oklahoma announced today it will be featured on this year's ESPN all-access football special. The Sooners are giving the network special access to the program for a five-part series to broadcast on the family of ESPN networks Aug. 15-19.

Take a look at the details here: OU all-access

As a newspaper person, I'm always intrigued by these endeavors. OU wouldn't allow a newspaper within 200 yards of the program, but it's willing to open up its doors to anyone with a hand-held camera.

This is further proof -- if you needed any -- what an 800-pound gorilla ESPN can be. And this seems like pretty good counter programming for the Sooners against the Longhorn Network.

Speaking of the Longhorn Network, Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com asked UT fans to contemplate the 'what if' of the school's network becoming the Big 12 Network.

It's an interesting idea. It obviously wouldn't sit well with Texas fans -- and would seem like a bitter compromise for OU, OSU and A&M boosters -- but a Big 12 Network powered by ESPN that paid all 10 schools a significant share of revenue would be intriguing.

Will it happen? It seems a little far-fetched at the moment. But if the NCAA starts to restrict what can be shown on the Longhorn Network, it might rise as a possible solution.

ESPN is also responsible for one of my guilty pleasures -- pseudo-live telecasts of this year's World Series of Poker Main Event.

I definitely watched more than I should have, and you had to be impressed with the play of former Jenks graduate Ben Lamb, who earned a spot at the final table in November.

John Klein caught up with Lamb by phone yesterday, and you can read all about TV's latest poker star here.

And speaking of guilty television pleasures, I'm so glad new episodes of Storage Wars are back on A&E. But that is another blog for another day.

In my opinion, the only reason the Longhorn Network will potentially become the Big 12 Network will be because the original didn't prosper as planned.

And then of course Texas will make it look like they are doing the rest of the conference a favor by "inviting" them to join such an amazing venture. "See, guys? We are team players! Group hug!"

That's how it would have to work out. But without a second football game and without high school content, the LHN morphing into the Big 12 Network might be away for everyone to save face.
