What comes next after you conquer the world? You take a seat and let the world keep spinning.
Annika Sorenstam announced Tuesday that she is stepping down from competitive golf at the ripe old age of 37.
For comparison's sake, this is the same as Jim Brown and Barry Sanders stepping away from the NFL in the prime of their lives. Sorenstam isn't putting up her clubs because she can no longer play at a high level. She has won three tournaments this year, running her career totals to 88 career wins and 72 on the LPGA Tour, including 10 major championships.
An eight-time player of the year, Sorenstam apparently wants to someday be a candidate for mommy of the year.
"Because I love the game so much, this is obviously a hard decision to make, but it feels like the right one," she said. "I made this decision because I have a number of other priorities in my life, including starting a family, that I want to be as dedicated to as I have been to playing golf and it was always important to me to go out on my own terms."
The first player in LPGA history to collect $22 million in career earnings, Sorenstam can afford to relax. The big question now: How long until Tiger Woods decides he has enough money and has played enough golf? We'll get to watch him for a few more years. He's not going anywhere until he has won more majors than anyone in history.
