Another example why Tulsa is a college football town

The Oklahoma City Thunder is making inroads in Tulsa.

We have a wide variety of minor league sports, two Division I college basketball teams, a strong contingent of St. Louis Cardinals fans and more than our fair share of Dallas Cowboys fans.

But college football still dominates Tulsa.

If you want more proof, look no farther than ESPN's ratings numbers. The four-letter sports behemoth released its ratings for the 2012 football season. (You can see the full press release here.)

Tulsa tied Charlotte, N.C., and Las Vegas for 12th among the United States' 56 metered markets for ESPN's college football coverage. That's down from 2011 when Tulsa was seventh (aided, you would guess, by Oklahoma State's historic season).

Oklahoma City was eighth this year after finishing tied for second last year.

Who's No. 1 you ask? For the 12th straight year, it was Birmingham, Ala. This year, Birmingham's 8.9 rating for ESPN broadcasts was nearly double the second-highest rated city -- Greenville, S.C.

Tulsa's TV sets were also tuned into the Heisman Trophy presentation in large numbers. Courtesy of David Barron from the Houston Chronicle (you can read his TV/Radio blog here)-- the Tulsa rating for the Heisman Trophy show was seventh in the country, ahead of Houston, Knoxville, Tenn., and New Orleans. San Antonio, Texas, Birmingham and Kansas City were the top three markets for the program.
