The number one high school football recruit in the country did it again, faking left, faking right, and reaching under a table to pull out the hat of the college of his choice, South Carolina.

Guys most interested in hogging the spotlight, now there's somebody you want on your team, right?

Not that this latest installment of high school tomfoolery matters much. Going to South Carolina. Please. That old bull coach Spurrier has done the impossible, he has flopped back to back in the pros and in college, maybe he should go to Europe and average 4.5 points per game over there, or to Canada, and practice chips and putts behind the bench.

Who is responsible for the unsightly event of high school glory hogs showing off in public press conferences?

Wouldn't you think a parent or guardian or coach might say: Knock that garbage off and show some respect.

It is of course another low blow inflicted on the sporting scene by ESPN.

ESPN says it shows what people watch.

People will watch anything.

Thanks to Twitter, I didn't have to watch the overrated announcement today.

The guy is from South Carolina, only an hour drive from Columbia. You can't criticize him for staying home. It's also silly to blame him for "hogging the spotlight." Blame ESPN, the NCAA, the SEC, or any of the other organizations that will profit from his talents. He's just an amateur athlete enjoying this time and making the biggest decision of his life.
Spurrier managed to keep the nation's top player in state. Let's hope Mike Gundy can do the same with Barry J. Sanders next year.

I didn't watch it.

Contrary to popular opinion, an 18 year old kid CAN have the knowledge of what modesty means.

I didn't follow the history on this kids antics, but if he verbally committed to other schools first, there is an outside chance that he's been influenced "under the table".

I can honestly say that I didn't care either - but CLOWNEY and JADEVEON CLOWNEY were the #1 and #2 most searched Google items yesterday - so apparently people do. Apparently there's speculation that he may not qualify academically. Shocking.

zaphod, way to blame everyone but the athlete. Sure those organizations have found another cash cow.

But he is old enough to take some of the heat for being a showoff. If you put yourself out there for attention, you have to realize some of it is going to be people calling you a knuckle head.

I don't know anything about this story, but I'm curious... Is the kid's name really JADEVEON CLOWNEY ?!!! I pity the remedial English teacher who will have to call his name in class, while keeping a straight face. Thank goodness I am only 17 years from retirement.

One more pampered jock to be thrust upon the world with a fourth-grade reading level and several million in the bank. I guess I'd rather have him playing football at South Carolina than have him trying to make my change at the local QuikTrip.
Tulsan in Exile (2 years ago)
Tulsaadguy is absolutely correct. If this kid ever does graduate, he'll end up with a degree such as a B.S. in Sports Equipment Management. Professors and real college students hate being in class with clowneys ... er, clowns, like this.

How come it is always a Black Kid, you never see white kids hogging the spotlight!
senor notas (2 years ago)
On ESPN yesterday it was mentioned that the kid may have a hard time qualifying for the U of SC. Probably had a great HS education in South Carolina.

Wow, numerous people here judging the young man because of his last name, his place of birth and education, and his skin color. There are also insinuations that he accepted a bribe and that he's illiterate, without any evidence to support such notions.

Picker, these are your fans.

The kid's race is not he issue. But I can guarantee you that if his parents named him Jadeveon, he is going to struggle mightily with the standard English his professors will (or should) insist upon. If you think this is a racist generalization, you don't have a clue what universities have to deal with these days. I have thirty years experience in the classroom on which to base this observation.

I can't believe some of the comments on here, especially the racist ones. It's true the kid is not going to graduate cum laude, and will probably have to go to JC to get eligible for Div-1 academically. After that, he probably goes straight to the pros, he's that good. If you doubt it, watch his highlight video. The young man is just a freak of nature, 6'6" tall, strong, and FAST!! Routinely runs down RBs with ease, and tosses those HS offenseive linemen aside like cardboard cutouts. Needs work in the weight room, but this kid will be playing on Sundays for years.
