Are Tiger and the Thunder Finished?
Published: 1/31/2011 5:08 PM
Last Modified: 1/31/2011 5:08 PM

The question is no longer whether or not Tiger is the greatest golfer ever.

The question is: Is he the second greatest golfer ever?

Tiger no longer hits it the farthest. He is no longer the fittest, no longer the most intimidating. The young monsters are all over the tour. There may not be a single player ready to capture the spotlight. But there are two dozen young guys who can take him out any week. Tiger could win another major. Maybe a couple. But Jack is the best ever. Second is up for grabs.

The Thunder is finished in a way.

It has nothing inside. Zero. It cannot compete with Boston, Miami, the LA Puddles or San Antonio. It needs muscle inside to get to the elite level. It is a testament to just how fabulous Durant and Westbrook are that the Thunder can stay with the top teams right to the end. It's not curtains. Just add a bruiser.

The pro football all star game is a joke. Forget it. Let 'em throw footballs through tires. Do a skills competition. Anything but a game of touch.

That game last night was a heartbreaker- I should have taken the teaser, LOL

As for Tiger, he's the second best golfer ever.

Can that change? Yes. But someone is going to have to step up to do that, not a "pack of someones". I hope you're not holding your breath for Phil?

As for OKC, is it May yet? No. Wake me when it matters.

The Thunder are building a team that will consistently win 50+ games for a decade and may win one or more titles after it's all over. Their model should be the Spurs, who have won 50+ games every season since '97, with the exception of the strike-shortened 98-99 season. (That year they won the first of four NBA Championships.)

Other teams have made big trades the allow a quick-fix, but these may not achieve long term success. The Lakers were 42-40 the year before they acquired Pau Gasol 06-07, and there was a significant drop-off when they traded Shaq (34-48 in 04-05). The Heat were 44-38 last year, before acquiring Bosh and LeBron, and there was also a significant drop-off when Shaq got old (44-38 in 06-07). The Celtics were 24-58 in 06-07 before getting KG and R. Allen. Unlike those teams, the Thunder don't need to add more superstars for a quick, but temporary, fix.

Like the Spurs, who are excellent at adding talent by draft, trade, and free agency, they need carefully and patiently add solid players, rather than gambling by making risky trades or overpriced free agents. They have a great foundation, and Durant and Westbrook are only 22 years old. I don't see any reason to worry about a single loss.

Btw, Picker, the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year was just announced. For some reason, Darrelle Revis, whom you recently proclaimed as "the greatest ever at his position" failed to receive even a single vote (out of 50 possible votes). It's not like the voters don't typically vote for cornerbacks, either, as CBs have won the award 5 times since 1975, including Charles Woodson last year.

As I predicted, players from the Bears, Packers, and Steelers were all in the hunt, with Troy Polamalu (17 votes) edging out Clay Matthews (15 votes). While Revis is nowhere close to the best CB of all-time, Polamalu is at least in the conversation as the best safety ever. I'd rank him 3rd behind Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed, but he may pass Reed with a great performance on Sunday.

Well, you might have pegged the Tiger situation...but who cares? People are staying away in droves.

The Thunder? The crux of your statement is they aren't ready to take out the big boys? Well who said they were? But done? What does that mean? Stop playing? Stay home? Tell you what let's make it interesting. I say they will take out one of those two teams you listed in the West. My Lakers are playing like a team that is saying please beat me, I'm tired.

The Pro Bowl? Wow I am glad I missed most of that. I really can't remember a time when no rush was put on. Limit the rushers yea, but just to stand at line of scrimmage...no. Oh well it has always been the worst of all star games.

I find it hard to believe that the Picker is writing off a team full of 20 -22 year old players. The Thunder is a young team. They are already winning 2/3 of their games and they are needing only to add a big man who can compete with the best 5s in the NBA to reach the elite level. Assuming that one special big man is added, the maturing of this team over the next two or three seasons coupled with the aging of the Spurs, Celtics, and Lakers, could lead to a Thunder/Heat rivalry for NBA dominance during the middle and late years of this decade.

Not exactly your most astute observation there Pick...'the Thunder need a post player' wow, it's also cold out today. The most amazing thing about the Thunder is the guts they show when winning all these close games with a bunch of kids barely old enough to buy a 6 pack. The TW continues to amaze me with their absolute indifference towards our state's only pro franchise. BTW, the Heat game was down to the very last possession, not exactly what Id call a 'mismatch'.

I am willing to bet many of the NBA franchise owners out there would trade their current baggage for the Thunders organization any day of the week.

The Thunder needs post players and outside shooters.

There were actually people dumb enough to watch the Pro Bowl?
Don's World (2 years ago)
Yea glenn616 same thing pick said. But what does he mean by they are 'done"? Franchise is doomed? Or they can't win title this year? I am pretty sure he meant this year. Well that isn't that great of an observation. As not many thought they would. Getting better and being competitive was all I expected, they've done that. In fact I keep waiting for them to fall apart, but they aren't.
But if he meant done as a franchise and will never win title with this group, then I would love to hear about that. As they are only a Duncan or even a Gasol type away.

Mr. Picker, we have had this discussion before and I see its time to bring it again. Because of the change of equipment and course construction procedures, there can be no "Best Golfer Ever." You can have the Best in each generation but even that may be suspect with the talent that exists now. In this respect, it would have been great fun watching Bobby Jones if he were in his prime today.

Tiger already has 14 Major’s & he is Still Only in his mid-30’s

Remember Nicklaus was 48 when he won the Master’s & his last of 18 “Major’s”. He also won a US Open & The “Open” championships in his early 40’s.

Golf doesn’t put the wear & tear on the body, unlike other sports, Over the past few years we’ve seen Greg Norman, Tom Watson, & Bernard Langard almost pull off a “Major” win in their early 50’s.

Tiger is a ‘fitness” freak, stays in shape, he’s still young, & once he gets the “mental” game going again, 4 to 5 more Major’s over the next 20 year’s is ‘doable for a guy as talented as Tiger.

Yep, no inside bruiser’s plus “lethargic” perimeter “D” are Thunder’s achilles’ heel.

Tom Watson was actually 59...
signalbob (2 years ago)
Laffalot, Nicklaus was 46 when he won his last major, and he would tell you that that was the exception that proves the rule...don't count on Tiger winning any majors past 40. When you say TW is "only in his mid-30s" it demonstrates an immense ignorance of golf history. Hogan was the only player to dominate golf after age 36, and TW turns 36 next December. Jack won only 4 majors after turning 36, Nelson 3, no one else more than 3, and only a handful of players more than one major after 35...Watson won his last one at age 34. Tiger needs 5 to beat Jack's 18, so he really needs 2 in 2011 to give himself a shot. He needs 5 out of the next 20 or so to beat Jack. Not too likely. I'd say about 20-1 or more. If he doesn't get 2 this year, I'd make it 100-1. And no, I am not Tiger-hater, I was a fan long before most others, since he was a kid winning junior tourneys in SoCal. But I am also a realist, a golf fan, and I pay attention to history.

Thunder are a year away from top 2 in west. Don't forget Aldrich who could develop. I think the future at Center for them is Tibor Pleiss, a 7-1 Center from Germany, but only if he works like Ibaka has. Mullens is down there too, he could be the answer, he looked pretty good in the times he played.
