Are the Sooners cursed?

They called it Oklahoma's preseason No. 1 ranking a "curse" on ESPN.com. Here's why…

Alabama was No. 1 to start 2010 and finished No. 10.

Florida was No. 1 in 2009 and finished No. 3.

Georgia was No. 1 in '08 and finished No. 13.

USC was No. 1 in '07 and wound up No. 3.

Ohio State was No. 1 in '06 and finished No. 2.

USC was No. 1 in '05 and finished No. 2 to Vince Young.

USC was No. 1 in '04 and… finally, here we go… finished No. 1.

And where were the national champs dating back to USC '04 ranked in preseason?

Auburn in 2010 was No. 22.

Alabama in '09 was No. 5.

Florida in '08 was No. 5.

LSU in '07 was No. 2.

Florida in '06 was No. 7

Texas in '05 was No. 2.

Not sure I'd call it a "curse." If you're ranked at or near the top of the preseason AP poll, you're likely to look pretty good at season's end.

It's just that you're unlikely to win a national championship.

Yes, they are cursed.
By every Cow lover in the state.

How far will the Sooners fall after losing their opening game?

Going wire to wire isn't the challenge, it's winning the national title in general that is the challenge. A team is either destined to win the national title or they are not and their pre-season ranking doesn't dictate their destiny in anyway.

In the end, it will all come down to health. Defense doesn't win championship game games, the most healthy team in the championship game wins the championship game. This has actually been shown a number of times over the past decade.

The one advantage of being pre-season #1 is being able to recover quicker if you take a loss early in the season. For instance, if OU was to lose @ FSU in the second game of the season, they wouldn't drop as far and could still be in the mix at the end of the season.

Yes, we're cursed... That's evidenced by a) the passing of Austin Box, b) Travis Lewis's injury, c) the Ronnell Lewis situation - Need I go on?
