Around pro baseball: Musial's visits to Tulsa were memorable

St. Louis Cardinals legend Stan "The Man" Musial, who died on Saturday at age 92, made two exhibition playing appearances in Tulsa.

In April 1946, Musial, after a year away from the majors due to serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, had two hits to help the Cardinals defeat the Tulsa Oilers 14-0. That game was just before the last of three World Series championship seasons for Musial.

In July 1960, Musial went 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored as the Cardinals defeated Tulsa 12-5 before a then-record Tulsa baseball crowd of 10,023. It was the Cardinals' first appearance in Tulsa since 1946.

Musial was back in Tulsa three months later as he campaigned for John F. Kennedy. Among those Musial was joined by in Tulsa on that occasion as part of a nine-state presidential campaign tour were author James Michener and actress Angie Dickinson.

Musial, as a Cardinals executive, attended the May 1966 exhibition at Skelly Stadium when a crowd of 18,904 saw the Cardinals defeat Tulsa 5-4. And Musial also visited Tulsa in 1967 in his only season as the Cardinals' general manager to watch his team's top farm club.

He remembers well the excitement of attending his first high school football game, Edison at Booker T. Washington, before a capacity crowd at S.E. Williams Stadium in 1973. He also has reported on Tulsa Drillers baseball at both newspapers for almost 20 years.
