Around pro baseball: Two ex-Drillers on Team USA roster; Pirates sign Hawpe

Two former Tulsa Drillers -- Toronto pitcher R.A. Dickey and New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira -- were selected to the U.S. roster for the World Baseball Classic in March.

Dickey, the 2012 National League Cy Young Award winner, pitched for Tulsa in 1999. Teixeira played for the Drillers in 2002.

The selections for the 10-man bullpen were interesting. Three of those selections were from the 2007 Springfield Cardinals -- St. Louis' Mitchell Boggs, San Diego's Luke Gregerson and Cleveland's Chris Perez. When you add St. Louis closer Jason Motte, it's easy to see how Springfield swept both halves of the Texas League season and then swept Tulsa in the playoffs...

Joe Torre will be the USA manager. The team's first game will be March 8 in Phoenix and the finals are March 19 at San Francisco.

The Team USA roster is:

Infielders: Mark Teixeira, Yankees; Brandon Phillips, Reds; Jimmy Rollins, Phillies; David Wright, Mets; Ben Zobrist, Rays.

Catchers: Joe Mauer, Twins; Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers; J.P. Arencibia, Blue Jays.

Outfielders: Ryan Braun, Brewers; Adam Jones, Orioles; Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins; Shane Victorino, Red Sox.

Starting pitchers: R.A. Dickey, Blue Jays; Derek Holland, Rangers; Kris Medlen, Braves; Ryan Vogelsong, Giants;

Relievers: Mitchell Boggs, Cardinals; Chris Perez, Indians; Luke Gregerson, Padres; Craig Kimbrel, Braves; Heath Bell, Diamondbacks; Vinnie Pestano, Indians; Tim Collins, Royals; Glen Perkins, Twins; Steve Cishek, Marlins; Jeremy Affeldt, Giants. ...

Former Drillers first baseman-outfielder Brad Hawpe signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hawpe, the 2003 Texas League All-Star Game MVP, appeared to have retired when he was granted his release from Frisco of the Texas League last June after batting .260 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 35 games as he tried to come back from Tommy John-elbow surgery.

Hawpe is only 33 and was a National League all-star as recently as 2009. He has a .284 batting average in eight major league seasons...

Jonathan Singleton, a Texas League all-star first baseman with Corpus Christi last season and one of the Houston Astros' top prospects, has been suspended for the first 50 games in 2013 after testing positive for marijuana. Singleton batted .284 with 21 homers and 79 RBIs in 2012.
