As always, defensive tackle a position of concern for OSU

At defensive tackle, Oklahoma State's starters are seniors Shane Jarka and Chris Donaldson. When he arrived as a freshman in 2006, Jarka weighed 235 pounds. He now carries 295. The 299-pound Donaldson, an Anderson, S.C. native who transferred to OSU last year from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, has been the best tackle in camp. During last week’s scrimmage, he twice dropped Cowboy quarterbacks for safeties.

The current backups are third-year sophomore Nigel Nicholas and surprisingly good first-year freshman Davidell Collins. He was recruited as an end out of Bearden, Ark., and he definitely is undersized as a Big 12 defensive lineman (255 pounds), but Collins has thrived since being tried at tackle.

Among the other tackle backups is Cooper Bassett, a 265-pound sophomore who was switched from tight end.

“We’re still concerned about the defensive tackle spot,” coach Mike Gundy said. “We’ve got to stay healthy. It seems like we say that every year. Those guys are so hard to find. We need the ones we have to stay healthy and play hard.”

Bassett was switched to DE. He may play some DT during 3rd and long passing situations but that would be about it.

The DT position definitely scares me more than any other position on the entire team. No matter how great the recruiting classes have been, OSU cannot seem to bring in the big fellas.

I really hope the coaches can bring in at least two quality DTs in the 2011 class. I have to think that is the focus for the remaining portion of the recruiting season.

I was thinking yesterday that on several occasions Coach Gundy made the observation that good defensive tackles are among the hardest position to find and built depth. If that's the case, perhaps he and Coach Young should consider changing schemes to a 3 - 4 but still keep the "star" linebacker.

This makes the same sense as bringing in Coach Hogorsen - play the scheme that best matches the best athletes on the field. The reason given for the offensive change was that there are not enough quality D-1 tight ends and fullbacks available.

Well, the same case could be given for defensive tackles.

You need a 320 lb+ space eater at NT and 2 big DE to run the 3-4 as your base defense. See Bama last year. I like the 3-4 but I doubt Coach Young will run it much unless it's a passing down.
