At least this year, Bedlam basketball is back

Maybe now it can be stylish again to get excited about Bedlam basketball.

Really, if you're a fan of college basketball or Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, there's no excuse not to be in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday.

For only the second season in the last eight, we have a truly meaningful Bedlam basketball game. Before this season, OU and OSU haven't played each other in a year they both made the NCAA Tournament since 2008-09.

The Sooners made the regional final that year. The Cowboys were knocked out in the second round. But the recent struggles of the two programs make it seem like light years ago.

The teams played three times in 2008-09. Oklahoma won the two regular season meetings. OSU got revenge during the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City. All three meetings were decided by single digits.

That brings us to Saturday. I don't get the sense there's much buzz surrounding the game -- at least not yet -- but there should be.

Oklahoma State has been a different team since winning at Kansas. The Cowboys' season was on the brink. A narrow home loss to Iowa State followed by a loss at Kansas could have sent OSU spiraling. Instead, the Cowboys won both and now have the inside track to the Big 12 regular season title.

Oklahoma's season is a nice story, another tribute to the coaching acumen of Lon Kruger.

And like OSU, the Sooners used a win over a stumbling Kansas to keep its season headed toward the NCAA Tournament.

All of that figures to make Saturday great. OSU seems like the hotter and more talented team. OU is playing hurt and on the road. All signs give the Cowboys the edge.

But no matter the outcome Saturday, it's nice it once again matters beyond bragging rights.
