At stake: the Sooners' BCS skid
Published: 12/28/2008 10:32 AM

Among you is a "Roger from Tulsa" who made quite a point in a letter to Rivals.com senior college football writer Olin Buchanan last April:

"In the past several years, it appears (Oklahoma) is completely tuning out the coaches, and we are forced to watch a team with a hangover-like personality during game time."

The specific topic was the Sooners' four-game BCS losing streak, and at the time there were many like Roger who couldn't stomach it.

Buchanan, to his credit, didn't try to psychoanalyze the problem in his response, writing instead, "Perhaps OU merely has faced opponents that were better on a given night. At least that's the way I see it, and most reasonable OU fans probably see it that way, too."

So here we are again, 10 days before another Sooner BCS appearance. The biggest, actually, since this is the first time OU is in what's referred to as the BCS National Championship Game (they were still using bowls for this game in Stoops' past three trips).

I haven't sensed Roger-like trepidation from the Sooner faithful yet. I think they like what they're hearing from the players, who promise to be more of a united front than in the past two Fiesta Bowls, as sure as they promise to play with a boulder-sized chip on their shoulder after being made a field goal underdog.

If, however, OU slips up once more, you'll have to brace for the reaction. Accusing the Sooners of having a "hangover-like personality" could be among the gentler assaults. And it won't be as easy to accept a Florida-was-better explanation, even if it will be just as warranted.

When I made those comments about the "hangover" that seemed to be affecting the OU team of recent past bowl games, I believe that I was simply stating what most everyone was thinking. What in the world is wrong with them outside of the season? Hopefully, they will play closer to what transpired in Norman when Texas Tech came to town. I do think that we have a chance against Florida, though if you listen to ALL national talk shows and ESPN, we don't due to our slow, plodding farmer-types on defense, and lucky to play in the defenseless Big 12 offense!! Perhaps both coach Stoops and Sam Bradford should have gotten Tim Tebow's autograph at the awards ceremonies before the invincible quarterback reaches angelic status and just ascends to heaven or wherever the higher-ups have designated for him! As an avid OU fan living in the heart of the SEC (Atlanta), I sense a different reason that the Sooners have fallen on their faces in the last four BCS appearances, possibly excluding the SC massacre for the National Championship in which we had a grest passer with no wheels.I try to read everything I can get my hands on concerning OU football and this was the first time in the Bob Stoops era that I can remember the Sooners verbally expressing a goal other than the Big XII Championship. Its like a mountain climber reaching the summit and saying to himself,"I guess I'll go back down now"!
I can't remember when or where the goal of a Big XII Championship AND a National Championship was first uttered, but I do recall some journalist writing about it.
On another note, SEC team fans are SEC fans and the vast majority are pulling for their SEC representative instead of hoping for a loss to vindicate their place in the final standings.
GO SOONERS! GO BIG XII!

The main thing that has plagued OU in the past bowls is the lenght of time between regular season (Big 12 Championship) and the actual Bowl (National Championship game) They have always ended those seasons extremely strong, "On a Roll" so to speak. Then to have that roll come to a complete stop and just continue with practices etc. only is what kills their momentum. Hopefully this year they can find away to keep the momentum running. Go SOONERS... show Florida and Tebow what it is like to play as a team...

All good points !!
I have no doubt by what I have seen in the press,,so far..for this game that the Sooners are preparing for this huge game with a "Take No Prisioners" type of attitude.
I also read the comments by USC after they whipped up on Penn State.
I also heard the TV comments during the Rose bowl that the Winner of the Rose bowl should play the winner of the OU-Florida game.
Well...those are not the rules of the bowl system..yet. So until that time, we can savor the opportunity and GOOD fortune that OU has this year. But,,,It sort of sounds like OU will need to win by at least 24 points to get the final approval of voters for the final pole results.

The Sooners CAN win big....(IF) the Sooners can manage to crank up to 100%,, ALL facits of this huge game...
(Offense-Defense and Special Teams)
The Sooners must play fast and smooth offense with no turnovers and,,play smart and play smash mouth defensive football for the entire game from the opening kick off.

Mental and physical readiness seems to have been the OU- Achilles heel in the past bowl games after being off the field for 5 weeks. It is not hard to immagine that it takes some time to get back into rhythm and being hit and hitting back on the practice field.

Go Soonerrs...Make all the doubters eat turf...
