Three important stories:
1. Where are all the buffoons who said our picks of Oklahoma State plus versus Texas Tech, and Michigan over Penn State, were way off?
Usually the mongers of negativity who dip into and out of chat rooms and sports talk blabber shows speak only after the games are complete. Last week, the pinheads got overconfident and railed against our Oklahoma State and Michigan choices before the kickoffs. And look what happened. You have been disgraced.
2. Gundy.
Here is the way it works. Here is the line you cannot cross: You can't get personal with a young person who is an amateur. You want to take to task a rich coach who starts the wrong player, fine. You want to analyze a defense coach whose players are not even on the television screen with the receivers, great.
But don't get personal with a kid; therefore Gundy was right to stand up for his player. The way he did it, screaming at a woman as though about to charge, was wrong, though. Had he acted that way toward a man, he probably would have provoked a fist fight.
There is such a mean-spirited tone to sports today, somebody has to try to stop it. Maybe screaming is the only way Gundy thought he could be heard. But not to a woman, pal. Speak calmly, make your point, the respect might be contagious.
3. Misc.
If you're looking for a reason why Mike Leach has become as much a fixture in Lubbock as the dusty Buddy Holly statue, you have to look no futher than the goofy coaching performance Saturday.
He seems more interested in running up stats and showing off than closing out a victory by running the football.
OSU's Savage is a first round draft pick. Had he been available, OSU would have defeated Helen of Troy.
But what is that OSU pass defense about? As we explained to the TU pass defenders, it's only a 15-yard penalty, grab somebody.
The worst call of the year was TU offensive co-ordinator Gus sending a linebacker up the middle against OU on fourth and one. OU's secondary hasn't stopped a decent passer since Bobby Proctor was fired many years ago. Put 14-0 on the scoreboard and see how OU would have reacted.
Former TU coach K probably wishes he was back here. Maybe TU and Louisville will play in the Peanut Bowl.
Were those hillbillies booing Nebraska coach Callahan off the field in Lincoln?
The national television coverage of the TU-OU game was disgraceful from Tulsa's perspective, as former hack coach and current hack announcer Bob Davie belittled the local team repeatedly, seeming to snicker at their difficulties several times.
Finally, might we have a moment of silence for Marcel Marceau.

Two things, Mr. Picker.
1. The Oklahoman columnist has a right to her opinion and Gundy has a right to disagree. But it's not a gender thing ... if she's going to write her opinions she's going to have to stand up like a man and take it when someone disagrees. She probably already knows that. And, I suspect Gundy would have had a similar reaction if the columnist were male.
2. The national coverage of OU-TU was ridiculous. They spent more time talking about the demise of Notre Dame than they did telling us who caught what pass and for how many yards. And then they had the audacity to bring in Lou Holtz to comment on Notre Dame while the OU-TU game was still going in the first half. Ridiculous!!!!

Defending Carlson by saying she's a woman is a copout, in my opinion. Man, woman, cow, pig, doesn't matter. If that's the best excuse you have, you've got to do better than that.
If she didn't want to be publicly taken to task in an angry fashion (did you expect Gundy to be pleased?), she wouldn't have written that piece of fecal matter she called an article. Taking cheap shots at a kid when he's down is the lowest a writer can go, but Ms. Carlson went ahead and did it.
What's worse? The Jokelahoman stands by her article. PLEASE!
Gundy took the print media to task (finally!) for some of the garbage that's being put out by the DOK, and the media can't stand it. They can't stand to be taken down a peg. I mean, how can you defend what this woman did? ALL she had to do was check the facts before writing her story. That's THE GOLDEN RULE of journalism. You don't want to risk your credibility, so you check you facts before going to print.
That's all she had to do, and she didn't do it. Instead, she based her entire article off of "rumors," "rumblings," and pure conjecture. It is, as Gundy put it, pure fiction.
Ms. Carlson, you are an amateurish writer for a WIDELY panned newspaper in a relatively small market. Maybe you should remember that next time before getting high and mighty and thinking that you can personally attack a kid. You are a despicable person, and you don't deserve to be working in the journalism business.

Cute Marcel Marceau quip. Made me smile. Now, to the other stuff. I see your point about not picking on a 'kid' in such a situation but that 'kid' is getting a free ed and lots of publicity, so the good can be accompanied by the bad...double-edged sword sorta stuff. No one should make snide, unkind comments about a cleft-palate or a club-foot, but failure to perform and prima-donna behavior are, in my estimation, grounds for criticism if, indeed, they are true. Yeah, Davie acted as though he was lobbying for the TU job. His snide behavior was unbecoming at best; especially when you consider the mess he made at South Bend.

To the picker: you definitely schooled on the OSU Tech and Michigan picks, you deserve props. Gundy's reaction was right on because Bobby Reid deserves the coaches passionate display, and published articles are trans gender. We all lie in the beds we make. I agree about the nit wits calling the OU TU game, I'm glad other people recognized their incompetence. I'm glad I still have an AM radio in my house and a mute button on my tube. Three cheers for Stoops and Gundy, and a high five to Paul Thompson.

Carolyn: The TU coverage was horrific, worst ESPN production ever. Talking about Notre Dame was repulsive. You see that one drip was upset because he didn't have his own personal men's room?
Gundy had every right to stand up for his player but didn't have to act like a tag-team wrestler in doing so.
The column stands on its own: unnecessary, too personal about a kid.

One more thing, I bet Stoops has Gundy's back for 6 more days as Bomar plays against the Pokes on Saturday.

No one is making Gundy out to be the bad guy except for the media. Hmmm...I wonder why? Your colleagues' attempts to deflect criticism away from their profession is transparent and, quite frankly, humorous.
I normally like your stuff, Picker. But to make this an issue of gender is foolish.

I agree with Gundy.
I don't agree with his tone.
Your pass defense stinks.

Oh, I know you support Gundy's position. I appreciate your candor. Just don't make it out to be anything more than it actually is: a public outcry against yellow journalism.
Gundy's "tone" is EXACTLY what parents of recruits want to hear. You can't tell me that, as a parent, you wouldn't want your kid playing for a coach like Gundy. You see a guy going to war for one of his players who is being treated unfairly, and you want to go play for that guy. Frankly, Gundy's presser was ingenious.
And I'll concede that our Pass D could have been better, but that's not the point of our discussion is it?
Again, I appreciate that you side with Gundy. It's refreshing, since most other media members seem to be calling for his head. Gimme a break.

Picker, I very rarely agree with you, but I do in this instance. I think Carlson was absoultely wrong to write the column, especially with no substantiated facts to back it up. It's all about attribution, and Carlson had none.
I also think Gundy was right to stick up for his player. But I also think Gundy went about it the wrong way.
To me, it's not about whether Carlson is a woman; it's about Gundy becoming the story. His team just played a great game, and the fans deserved to know his thoughts about it.
Instead, he became the story. He went after her, obviously in an attempt to make his displeasure known across not just Oklahoma, but the nation. His intent, to me, was not just to reprimand Carlson, but to embarrass her and the Oklahoman.
That's his prerogative, but I think it was inappropriate. If Gundy would have voiced his displeasure calmly, he would have gotten his point across. Then, he needed to tell fans his thoughts on what was a great game.
Then, in private, away from the cameras, he could rip Carlson a new one that she so sorely deserves.

Dear Mr. Picker Person,
I've never called in to a sports radio show before, but after listening to the blather on the Sports Animal this morning, I was sorely tempted. This was before I read your blog about GundyGate. And as usual, you were way ahead of the curve and I have to give props to Mr. Picker for raising an issue that nobody else is talking about (namely: Gundy's personal attack on female person Jenni Carlson).
First, let me say that I've not entirely unbiased on this deal. I grew up in Kansas and attended KU for a couple of years so I have to show some solidarity with my fellow Jayhawker Jenni.
I subscribe to the Daily Oklahoman and I read the article Saturday or whenever it came out. As I recall, my first reaction was that it wasn't particularly revelatory. I didn't really think it raised any issue that hadn 't already been hashed over a thousand times on sports radio (Bobby Reid doesn't make good decisions, he isn't that good of a runner, he's soft and injury prone, etc.). And secondly, Gundy and others saying that parts of the article are "lies" is dishonest. If you're going to say that something is a "lie", please offer evidence to the contrary. For example, Gundy said that rumors that Bobby Reid wanted to transfer are inaccurate. How does HE know? Did he give Bobby a polygraph test? Perhaps Bobby expressed his feelings to another coach or to a teammate or to some ink-stained wretch in OK City.
All that being said, I have to take issue with you for not going far enough in the defense of Ms. Carlson. I know nothing about Jenni Carlson or her personal situation. However, let's say, FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT, that Ms. Carlson and her significant other have been trying to have a baby. Maybe she's had a miscarriage or maybe she can't conceive at all. And then you have this yayhoo football coach get up on national TV and say: "Jenni Carlson YOU'RE not a mother." How appalling and despicable is that??? Just food for thought...

New Media tactic:
Act like a md man & maybe no one will ask why the leading receiver in the big 12 & TD leader in the country is running around wide open in the end zone with 11 seconds to play?

i think if a woman is going to write a column about a men's sport, football, she should have to take criticism the way a man would. Therefore i have nothing against what Gundy said or how he said it. I'm actually an OU fan too, and actually yes, i agreed with Gundy BEFORE Stoops came out and said he agreed with Gundy.
Oh and picker, i loved your line about the hillbillies booing Calahan, that was good.

Picker,
Your long-held point about "journalists" also being on the payroll of universities never rang mor true than last night when the homer boys on the blitz defended Gundy. Wow, what a surprise. Holcomb wears an orange OSU shirt during broadcasts. Same for the sports guy on the local Fox channel. Journalism has a job for these jokers - it's call p.r.

Gundy's lack of professionalism was horrible. If he had a problem with someone's column, handle it behind closed doors. How many readers would want to be called out like that with TV cameras there to record it? If he doesn't grow up and learn to act like a head coach, he won't be one as soon as Boone isn't around to protect him.

I've watched the replay of Gundy's tirade against Jenny Carlson and I have to laugh. I loved it. I applaud Gundy for standing up for his player. Like Stoops said in an earlier comment about this ordeal, these are 18 and 19 year old kids. The news media has gotten to the point where they possess way too much power. Regardless of whether they are right or not, they have the last word and don't have to be held accountable for it. They claim the right to free speach, and when called on their sources, they don't have to reveal anything. Seem a little one sided? Being a woman is irregardless...if she is going to write about a mans sport, she needs to be ready to take any rebuttal like a man. Personally I never read her column but for some reason this one caught my attention. My first thought was what does she have against this kid? I agree with what one of the local radio personalities said earlier today...she needs to stick to human interest sotries and leave the columns to those that know what they are talking about.

Ms. Carlson has the right to print whatever her editor will approve...it's called freedom of speech my friends. Now...she also has to face any consequences that her writings may bring on her and her newspaper. That judgement could come in the form of a lower circulation or a repremand from her boss (NOT).
Jeremy
On to Coach Gundy. He has the right to stand up for his players, BUT MUST REPRESENT HIS EMPLOYER IN THE PROCESS. His team just got a gift win (and a much needed one) when a Tech receiver got a case of the drops. He should have been more professional in his defense of Reid and moved on to take questions. If he faces a reprimand from the Big 12 (and he should), then he will face those consequences.
