Attention TU Fans

There's one good thing to come from the TU basketball team scoring 37 points. Hopefully. Surely.
No, the game was not halted at the half due to electrical trouble.
TU scored 37 stinking points for the whole game.
The good thing to come of it is that the Doggie Bag Tournament is off the table.
Remember last year when we got into it with TU fans far and wide for saying that a team would be better off playing HORSE than playing in a Has Been Tournament where losers paid to play? We said that playing in a tournament with bottom feeders was demeaning and would do no good whatsoever.
TU fans, however, stood and cheered and got goosebumps as the home team defeated Southeast Northwest Central State Tech.
We concluded: whatever. But REAL basketball was playing OU, was playing OSU, was playing teams with matching socks.
So what the Doggie Bag Tournament actually did was clear a few bucks and create a somewhat embarrassing precedent; and prepare TU to score 37 lousy points.
Here's where we are with TU. All is not lost. It lost by an inch to a top six or seven team. But getting into the NIT would be a very good idea. Any way you look at it, next season, it's heat all around.
In slightly related news, Dick Vitale and that puppet sidekick of his should be banned from announcing Duke or NC games on the grounds of making fans want to throw up. He could raise more money for charity by promising never to do another Duke-Carolina game than he has ever raised before.
And any TU fan haboring a hope of a return to the Doggie Bag Tournament should be ashamed.

I miss the days when the Picker used to be funny. Now it's a bunch of contradictory nonsense.
A couple of weeks back you get on TU fans for questioning the coach. Wojcik has done fine at times, but he also has made some mistakes and you refused to even recognize it. You attacked the fans for not getting into the Memphis game, and yet you attack them for enjoying the CBI last year. That's a contradiction.
I'm not saying the CBI was the end all, be all of anything. It sure beat not playing basketball, though, and I'm pretty sure you paid to see every game like the rest of us, Picker. No one ever said it got us ready for the big time.
So, this season rolls around and some of us realize that while this team has a couple of stars, it's isn't complete and ready to play. I brought up this point on this blog and you pulled this homer nonsense. Then your paper actually writes some silly articles about TU getting an at large bid to the NCAAs (not going to happen after losing to Ohio and Tulane). And now you're looking for some new cheap shot at TU fan.
You're just looking for something to rant about. Take a break and get some material that makes sense.

Well if it isn't the head cheerleader of the Doggie Bag Tournament
Remember how you suggested that it was an important athletic endeavor?
So are you still there?
You want back in the joke tournament?
You want funny?
Here's funny.
Thirty seven points.
TAB
I don't think I called it an important athletic endeavor. Didn't say I wanted back in the tournament, either.
My point all along was that basketball beats no basketball. TU fans had fun. There is nothing wrong with that. I didn't think they should hang a banner for it (still not sure why your paper didn't ask that question).
You've gone from being a total homer to being a negative Nancy. Maybe we can get you on the Sportsanimal morning show with Lump and Dump and Chump and Pork if you keep it up. We'll call you "Punk."
At least you recognize the 37 points. And that goes back to the coach messing up in recruiting. And that was a point you wouldn't discuss a couple of weeks back. You'd rather hate on your readers/customers than the people who make the decisions on these things, like whoever decided to recruit the JUCO point guard who didn't start on a bad JUCO team. You aren't intested in a discussion of what's wrong with TU's team, you'd rather fail at being funny.

One of the things wrong with TU basketball is fans thinking if Gonzaga can do it, so can we.
At a small school, it's a long, long way back from where some former coaches took the program.
Why?
TV exposure, for one thing. Big stars want publicity that comes with the best conferences.
One level down from recruiting big stars is getting lucky with local or regional players.
Great recruiting and great coaching and great fans, that's all it takes.
TAB

Hey, we're getting somewhere. I new the Sports Hyena comparison would wake you up.
Gonzaga has such an easier road than TU, at least in terms of fans. They are the only show in that part of the world. People show up to games in Spokane to support their local team in a way somewhat reminscent of how OU fans treat football (not the same thing, but bare with the example). You see Gonzaga stuff all over Spokane. And the people there seem to really like basketball on top of that (the Zags were playing in another region once, yet Spokane came out to watch the games taking place in their downtown arena).
Not only does TU have to recruit with several regional schools for fans, it also has to do the same for players.
Gonzaga has had a great run and they truly have something special. Part of it is luck (ever seen Adam Morrison's recruiting profile?) and part of it is having a monopoly on sports dollars. More than anything, they kept their coach.
Washington and Washington State don't advertise or expect to draw many fans from Spokane. The Zag fans spill over into Idaho and Montana. There is no Arkansas or KU nearby, much less and Missouri State, Wichita State, or ORU.
That said, if TU can find over a million bucks to pay Graham to win consecutive Department of Treasury bowls, they've got the bucks to pay and keep a coach. You keep the coach and the system of play in place, you can bring in good players and fans. It happened over a couple of decades with several different coaches; stands to reason it could happen in the same amount of time with the money.
TV is a problem. But if you're good, you make it on tv. Look at Memphis and Gonzaga. TU has the AD right now to pull that kind of deal off. Regardless, TU has a much better tv deal than they did in the WAC.
I like the current coach. He's smarter than he gets credit for. He's botched several signings, though. As far as as I can tell, he recruited the kid from Putnam City (that quit in December) so Cal could land his teammate. No clue why they recruited Hernandez or failed to replace Hill. The system of play isn't exactly something talented young guards would be drawn to.
Also, while I like the coach, at times I question whether he understands how to sell the school. TU has a lot going for it. Somehow we're able to steal elite players in football. The coach might benefit from a campus tour or auditing a class to understand what the school has to offer.
Why on Earth he'd put himself in a position to lose Clarke to someone like ORU (he eliminated TU before ORU) is another mystery. Granted, he wasn't going to pay the kid's dad, but c'mon . . . it's ORU.
By the way, Picker, did you notice the Mabee Center is hosting the Pink Floyd Laser Light Show?

he asked me to resend a story, twice, and when i asked if he read it, as in followed up, he got angry, several times. it's ok to be busy, but why get mad just because i followed up on his request? what do you readers think? is the picker's act truly part of his character for real? i am at a loss with this self-centered windbag. thought i'd put it out there, see if any of his friends, ex-wife excluded, can give me a tip.

There is one think I like about the Picker, but I can't remember what it is.

TU's mistake was hiring Doug Wojcik. He can't keep a point guard on the team, and it is obvious that this is a definite need during his tenure. He recruits guards and seems to drive them away after a few months.

The CBI tournament was really cute last year when the team started out dreadfully (2-6 in conference), but not for this year's team.
To go back to the CBI would be an embarrassment. Anything short of the NIT should be considered unacceptable by the team, fans, and AD.
One thing gonzaga does that TU doesn't---put together a home non-conference schedule that actually makes people care. The kicker was that the OU game was at BOK---they finally had a chance to reward all those fans who sit through boring games against Texas Pan-Am and central eastern arkansas state annex with a high profile game and they move it downtown???
Give me something to watch please!!!

Picker,
Tulsa did beat Texas A&M, who beat OSU. If big 12 football taught us anything about "big time" big 12 sports, we know that was more important than the whipping OSU put on us earlier, and we should be in the NCAA tourney over either of those teams, whether or not we beat Chattanooga, err, won the CBI.

It's just difficult to watch TU basketball. Everything looks so mechanical.
The coach does a great job of getting his team to play solid defense and rebound, but they seem to be scared to death on offense.
I can't imagine a great player wanting to come in and play in this system. You are absolutely right,37 points says it all !!!

People, you are missing the point (literally). TU has NO PG... Uzoh is not a PG, and whoever else Wojo sticks out there is a D-II prospect at best.
TU has recruited poorly, very poorly. Why can we not get some talented players?
Why can we not break the press? I've seen high school teams handle the pressure better. Did anyone see OU breaking the Baylor press? Blake Griffin was doin it, a big man! Our guards can't even do it?
24 turnovers is criminal is every state except California.
Self had players coming here, good JUCO's (Kurtz and Shelton) out of state (Johnson, Harrington) in state (Reed, Swanson, Hill, Coley). WHY can we not get close to that level of talent?
Breaking the press is fundamental, if you have PLAYERS! You pass the ball, preferably UP the court, not around in the backcourt.
One more thing, big man (yes you Jordan) POST UP and mean it. Don't get pushed around and get the ball 10 feet from the basket. Hit the weights! I can push you off the blocks and I'm 5'10"!
Wojo has used up all his lifelines as far as I'm concerned. Poor recruiting = poor future.

Little Richard, now that's an interesting point -- going to the style of play.
Michigan State is leading the Big Ten, playing tough D and mushball on offense. Wouldn't you be happy winning 52-50, though?
Zach, you're right, the position of dribbler (point guard) didn't become important this season. It has been there for some while.
Still and all, you'd have to think next year is the critical period for Wojo. He deserves the chance. Why? Somebody decent would hire him, that's why. And giving somebody a chance doesn't mean putting him on trial. It means unconditional support.

Anyone who thinks this team has no talent or that Woj has done a bad job overall in recruiting isn't paying attention. Jordan has come a long way and is now listed as a potential lottery pick, definite first rounder. When has that happened at TU in the last 20 years?
Jordan is so much stronger than he used to be. Yeah, he gets pushed around. That's because he's good. Ever see what used to happen to Shaq in the NBA? He got mauled. No, Jordan isn't Shaq; but he also hits free throws.
The issue is getting all the pieces to work. We have the hard to find part -- a good big guy. Why TU hasn't found another decent guard is a mystery. I'm just glad that the Picker admits the point, whereas a couple of weeks back it was "bull."
Matt

Tulsa needs to make it to the NIT this year and the NCAAs next year or Wojick needs to be fired. Any Tulsa fan that says otherwise is accepting mediocrity and that's sad given the history and tradition that the program has. Nice guy? So what. Your job is to win, not to be a nice guy.

TAB: Take off the rose colored glasses my brother. Jordan is tall, that is about it. He needs the ball on the blocks. Why? Because the 10-15 ft. jumper is not his game. Therein lies the problem, he is weak. Marginally good big men in C-USA can push him around. You think he is going to man up on some of the best in the NBA?
Jordan should dominate C-USA, period!
I was only half joking about the talent. We got a break and landed Jordan, a good return. But outside of JJ and Uzoh, what does TU have? A bunch of NAIA all-stars. They look outclassed against others teams. JJ and Uzoh are the only guys that save TU from being a joke.
When JJ is gone, you watch TU regress.
I hate to say it, I love my school; but the truth hurts.
