Austin prediction: Hawkins or Gundy 'will not be back next year'
Published: 9/16/2009 12:45 PM
Last Modified: 9/16/2009 12:45 PM

Kirk Bohls is a longtime Austin American-Statesman sports columnist. Check out the blog that he posted on Sunday:

"For our prediction of the week, either (Colorado's Dan) Hawkins or Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy will not be back next year. . . . Mr. Cowboy T. Boone Pickens cannot be happy that his millions haven’t brought him a better 42-year-old coach. Houston has a very good team, but Cowboys fans had to think their newly discovered fame had a longer shelf life than one week. Gundy may not be able to afford to go even 8-4."

Also from Bohls:

"Much kudos to Houston for its upset of Oklahoma State – if it was an upset. Give former athletic director Dave Maggard huge props for having hired Kevin Sumlin (from Oklahoma) and Art Briles before that. It says here, if you take a snapshot right this second, Houston is the second-best college football team in the state after Texas (and) right before Texas Tech."

Bohls also predicted that Sumlin is about to become "the hottest commodity in coaching."

The Austin guy's comment is a stupid one.

It's obvious Hawkins won't be back.

The clever operator (by this I mean something else) is guaranteed a correct prediction.

If OSU goes 8-4 this year and plays well in a bowl game, they better keep Gundy. Losing to Houston was a big, big blow, but winning against Georgia was still the more important game of the two. Houston played an FCS school the week before ... it's not the same. That said, yeah, OSU was ranked higher than they realistically were. Even so, this Austin guy's 'prediction' is just another example of a sportswriter trying to create a buzz. He's guaranteed his prediction will be right because of Hawkins He just thought it would be more fun to include Gundy in on it.

I am not a proponent of firing Gundy. I think he has done a much better job than I thought he would. He installed the offensive system that is the system for the foreseeable future in the Big 12. He has consistently made us relevant in the recruiting race and as a result we are now, maybe not as much as we had hoped at this point, still more nationally relevant than we have been since we had two NFL hall of famers at running back. That said, Gundy getting fired is a real possibility. It is still possible that we lose to A&M, Baylor, Mizzou, or Tech. If we lose to any more than one of those and then lose to OU and Texas, he is probably gone.

Obviously this guy hasn't done his homework and knows nothing about neither OSU nor CU.

For one, Coach Mike Gundy is a work in progress, but for the most part OSU fans are happy with the job Mike has done.

He's greatly improved the talent and recruiting just gets better.
His headcoaching is also getting better. One slip-up against Houston is not going to get Mike fired. OSU regained the lead, but then failed to hold it. It wasn't Gundy who laid the ball down nor threw the INT.
OSU should have won that game. Not Gundy's fault.

It would take a complete meltdown for Gundy to be released this year.

Stupid call by the Austin hack.

Now, living in the Rockies, the local CU reports are that Hawkins is solidly backed by the CU admin.
Sure, he's has a couple of disappionting losses already in a year CU was supposed to challenge for the Big 12 North. Now, he could be in trouble if he continues to keep son, Cody, as the starter.

Nepotism is what put the final nail in the OSU headcoaching coffin for Bob Simmonds. Keep playing your son, dispite the fact that there are better players sitting on the bench, will not endure you to team and fans. Once you've lost the team, you've lost it all.

Hawk had better make a change at QB or he's going to lose the support of the rest of CU fans.
Lose the fans and the Admin is soon to follow.

But, CU officials continue to voice great confidence that Hawk is their man.

So, this Austin-American Statesman writer needs to stick to writing what he knows more about -- the best chicken fried steak in Austin and UT football.

After OSU looses to OU, UT, T-Tech, A & M and Mizzou, They can stick a fork in Gundy. It's too bad. I think that he is doing as good as anyone can do at OSU. The Big 12 South is as tough as you can get.
