Bad Trend: Being Trendy
Published: 3/30/2007 5:08 PM

Being trendy and going for a media darling as a college basketball coach is dumb.

It is possible for a college basketball coach to get hot without having done anything of real value.

One great player can make a college coach look great. That's o-n-e. Look at what happened at Arkansas. Heath has one strong player at a rinky-dink school (Kent State) and was hired because of that hot flash.

Bill Self is considered a great coach by media members far and wide but hasn't done much of anything, anywhere. Forget his not winning the big one. He hasn't even won a medium-sized one. No Final Four team. Not a single Elite Eight victory. Where was the greatness displayed?

Everybody wants the Texas A&M coach. Why? He has not done a whole lot outside the expertise of one Mr. Acie Law.

Why hire a coach made hot by a dopey media and a great player or two?

Why not hire somebody with proven skills.

We're here to help you with your hire anytime.

Picker Is Lazy (6 years ago)
The picker doesn't do research. He must be lazy. Just likes to rely on wise cracks to make his points. If he wasn't lazy and did do research, he would see that A&M was 0-16 in conference the year before Gillespie got there (yes, with Acie Law) and they have improved every year since. How is that equal to "not done a whole lot"? That's a helluva lot, and as much as any one of his favorite coaches would have done with the program. Similar story at UTEP. Yeah, great blog, Picker.

Lets see Gillespie, at the very least, make it to two sweet sixteens at atm before we crown him the next "great one". Jeez, I wonder what they would crown him if he, by chance, won a sweet sixteen game!

That was nice coaching when Gillespie went into a stall late?

We'll see won't we.

All I'm saying is one player can make an average coach seem like more than what he or she really is.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
