Bad news rocks OSU program

Only four days before the Georgia game, bad news rocked the Oklahoma State program.

The departure of tight end Jamal Mosley, who on Tuesday left the program for what is described as "personal reasons," and the loss of injured middle linebacker Orie Lemon could really hurt the Cowboys. It seems possible that Lemon, who started in all 13 games last year, could be sidelined for the entire 2009 season.

In 2006-08, a significant factor in OSU's offensive success was the blocking and pass-catching of Brandon Pettigrew, who now is a rookie tight end with the Detroit Lions. Mosley is a quality athlete who might have become a gifted receiver, and he recently expressed a resolve to develop into an effective blocker

"I watched film of Brandon and saw the interior work that he did in blocking," Mosley said. "It made a huge difference for our offense."

But Mosley now is a former Cowboy, and the tight end job now falls to sophomore Wilson Youman, who last season had one catch for 4 yards.

Could Tracy Moore be converted to tight end?

The former Union star has been perhaps the most impressive freshman in preseason camp. Cowboy coaches seem somewhat stunned by how good Moore has been. Moore is a big wide receiver at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds. If he could handle the physical demands of the tight end position, Moore might thrive at tight end. He certainly has big-time hands.

With Lemon having apparently sustained a serious knee injury, OSU loses a veteran senior in the defensive middle. Senior Donald Booker, a junior-college transfer now in his second season at OSU, should move into the starting role at middle linebacker.

Booker did have a solid spring and is faster than Lemon, but Lemon recorded 90 tackles last season. Even if Booker emerges as a quality performer, a huge dent has been kicked in OSU's linebacker depth.

This is just the beginning. I told you. I've hollered for OSU my entire life - 2nd generation OSU graduate here. We will find a way to screw it all up. It wouldn't surprise me to see us go 3-10. Just you wait.

Players will leave, players will be hurt. This won't be the last injury this year. All teams will lose players. It only provides an opportunity for a younger player to step up be a man now. Don,t give up before the season starts!

Talk about being kicked in the stomach. Even my excitement for the season took a hit when I found out that Lemon got hurt.

I know Booker is a big time player but the depth is what took the hit. Who is behind Booker now on the depth chart?

Also, I hope the guys keep their heads high on defense. Lemon was as much of a leader as Sexton. I hope they keep the confidence at the same level despite the injury.

No More Injuries!!!!

Sorry for stating the obvious, but here's the unfortunate news:

Should our Bulldogs upset you guys this weekend, your program will experience the too cruel side effect that preseason hype carries. (Just as we got a heaping dose of last year.)

The cliche is true. Injuries are, indeed, part of the game. Just like a great play during a crucial part of a paritcular game, an injury or two can certainly derail a season of high hopes. (If we had only had a healthy O-Line last year...)

The double edged sword of pre-season accolades result in trite claims of being "over-rated" from your rivals and people that don't know the truth of what went down. Which is a shame...but part of the game.

I hope Lemon has a speedy recovery and comes back stronger for the Pokes next year. Cheers to a good game on Saturday!

Go Dawgs! Go Pokes!
