Basketball's Dumbest Play
Published: 2/14/2007 4:32 PM

Many smart sports visit this site regularly. Let's see how many scholars have seen the most feared play in hoops.

A team is down by three points with ten seconds left to go in the game.

This team brings the ball across half court and starts to set up its three-point play......seven seconds, six, five.

The opponent fouls the team down by three in a non-shooting situation.

Four seconds left.

The player on the team behind by three makes the first free throw.

Then he misses the second on purpose.

Two seconds left.

The ball is tipped to a teammate who launches a two-point shot as the buzzer sounds.

It's good! Overtime!

I'll tell you how many people have seen that.

None.

Once.

Ever.

The odds on making one free throw and then missing on purpose and then canning a two-or-three-pointer are one in thousands. Or more.

In other words, coaches fear a play that has never happened.

When you're ahead by three and the other team only has time for one more shot, FOUL!

A college three-point shot is a sitting duck.

OSU's Sutton fouled leading by three the other night and, or course, won.

Coaches who give an opponent a chance to tie on the last three-point shot are flat-out dumb.

He welcomes the competition.
