Best Football Season Ever?
Published: 6/30/2008 10:56 AM
Last Modified: 6/30/2008 10:56 AM

The greater the possibilities, the earlier the gridiron season starts.

The Picker is currently working on approximately 100 stories that will make your season more enjoyable and profitable, where that's legal.

Here are some of the top questions being studied.

Have OU, OSU and TU ever been better in one year?

Will TU steal some of OSU's glory?

Can OSU play a lick of defense?

Is OSU over Washington State the lock of the year?

Will OSU live up to its net worth?

Can excess cash be used to move Stillwater closer to the big time?

Will Nebraska be the number one surprise team of the country?

Is Sam Bradford tough enough to win OU a shot at a national title?

Will the Big Ten be the national joke again?

Will ESPN's Cindy Brunson rival Neil Everett as the worst sports anchor ever?

Is Bob Barry actually going to announce OU games again?
If so, will he need the Hubble Telescope to see fumbles?

Has a certain TV sports figure had a nip and a tuck?

Will two of TU's coaches be the two hottest head coaching prospects in the country?

Will the Picker hit his sixth consecutive Lock of the Millennium?

Will OSU have a glorious 7-8 win season, including a bowl win over Northwest Taco State, and then proclaim themselves a "team on the rise"?

Of course. Same song, 20th verse.

Matt, those are the wins that justify the name "the greatest show on turf."

Will OU, once again, get lost in the Desert?
Ken (5 years ago)
Will all Gooners proclaim that any and all losses were the ref's fault....uh no wait it was the sun in our eyes. No, that can't be it. It's everyone but the sooners fault!!!!!
Arthur (5 years ago)
Are you referring to the last time OU won a bowl? Don't get me wrong I would rather have OU's situation in football than OSU's in terms of wins and bowls the last two seasons, but let's be honest just as much as we have underachieved OU has choked on the national stage. Either way it should make for an interesting year.

Is it very easy to substitute questions for thoughtful insight and analysis?

100 stories? You have yet to write one story, World Picker. Drivel does not qualify as a 'story'.

The number one question to be studied:

Will World Picker continue his embarrassing slide into tabloid style 'journalism'?

Others of interest:

Will World Picker ever pick a game that a bunch of nine year old Girl Scouts haven't already picked correctly?

Will World Picker and his minions ever exhibit anything but childish mendacity?

Is World Picker actually the offspring of Cindy Brunson and Neill Everett? conceived during the Sports Animal radio tribute to Rick Reilly?

Has World Picker always been incompetent and a bigot?

Will Ken ever get out of 6th grade?

Ken, don't forget about "the wind." The wind in Colorado last season wreaked havoc on those U of O players... Somehow though, the wind was only a factor on the U of O side of the ball...

And Nit Picker, you are obviously well-versed, gramatically speaking, and very opinionated. Congratulations to you. But, it never ceases to amaze me how everytime you comment it is in regards to the Pickers lack of real insight and/or journalism, yet I still have never heard you say anything insightful in regards to the main topic of this site: Sports!!!

The NIT Picker seems to have an unhealthy obsession with the TW Picker. Either that or one of the Picker's ex's still grinding that axe.

Couldn't agree more about the TU comment. Hell, we could lose our AD too to Notre Dame. Give me the revolving door of successful coaches. I think most TU fans learned that lesson.

Congress needs to enact a law that forbids the big ten champion from playing in the bcs championship game for at least 5 years. How many times do we need to see the SEC destroying the Big Ten Chumps.

After that they need to pass a law that forbids the Sooners from playing in the Fiesta bowl. At the very least make sure Stoops can not coach in the game.

Which will get more hits by mid October? A Fire Gundy website or a an amature porn site giving away a free month.

All ready taking out a loan to put everything on Washington State.

Tulsa Football will be the surprise hit of the Fall. Booking my trip now to T town for the Conference USA championship game.

When if ever will the NCAA ever come down on USC? R. Bush took a paycut when he signed with the saints

Listening to Bob Barry and Merv the Drone is a painful experience. Bob has a J. Edgar Hoover file of some sort on Boren to ensure his job. Bob and Merv should be limited to women's lacrosse.

The rumor is that John Blake will replace Gundy in mid-season. T Bone says he wants his money spent on players, not coaches.

Five - count 'em - FIVE Big 12 titles, chumps. Get back to me when you've won something - ANYTHING.
stogdiddy (5 years ago)
5 big 12 titles: of which teams U of O defeated were screwed by the refs, the wind was blowing on the their side of the ball, the sun was in their eyes, they lost starters due to injuries and legal troubles, etc., etc., etc. You get the point...
Matthew (5 years ago)
One argument that always works against OSU fans...five Big 12 titles. They have no answer for it. Nothing but worthless noise comes out of their mouths once you drop that bomb.

Hooray! Nitpicker found his library card!

Matthew, OSU a "team on the rise" joke?

OU has had top 5 classes in recruiting for YEARS, and still can't win anything outside the Big 12. What does that say about OU? I bet you think they will win it all this year, right?

OSU fan's think we are always a "team on the rise". OU fans think they are always a "national championship team". Please. At least OSU has something to improve on. Get over your 5 Big 12 titles and hope for something more. I would if I was an OU fan.

Let OSU just work on getting better. Even OSU fans know OU has always been a football school.
Matthew (5 years ago)
The goal every year is to win your conference, Chris. If you don't accomplish that, you can't accomplish anything else. I don't disagree that OU's bowl performances have been nothing short of abysmal over the past 5 years, but that doesn't change the fact that OU has absolutely owned the Big 12 conference in the 2000s. That means another fact remains - OSU fans have nothing, absolutely NOTHING, to say when it comes to the game of football. Go back to talking about 'rasslin and golf.
Michael Chapman (5 years ago)
TU- team on the rise
OU- team on the mend
OSU- team.. er.. team that has...uh.. they used to have Barry Sanders! Er, ah... They're head coach is a grown man... They have a billionaire as a fan?
Chris (5 years ago)
Ok Matthew, I want you to seriously answer this question for me. I am not trying to get you upset.

If you take away OU's football championships, what else is there for it's athletic department? A decent basketball program? A pretty good softball team? Just curious.

I mean, OSU is at least equal if not better in virtually every other athletic sport. Name more then 2 that OU is better at. I realize that football is the big-time sport. But I would take a decent football team and better overall athletic department anyday over just a football program who continually wins conference championships and gets blown out on the Big stage. Think about it, the ONLY other school in the Big 12 that has equal talent is UT. You should never lose a game besides maybe UT every year.

And there is something we can say for everytime you talk about how we underachieve after each football year. Doesn't OU also underachieve with arguably the BEST talent crop in the country every season?

What does that say about OU?
World Picker (5 years ago)
Is anybody else concerned that OU's Bradford might not by physical enough?

You have to think that the number one plan against OU will be to go after the quarterback.

The number one story nationally is probably the disgrace of the Big Ten in recent years. It's hard to imagine why, since everybody recruits everywhere, but the Big Ten really plays slow. Penn State hasn't had a team in recent memory. Michigan looks like Rugers. Ohio State only looks good against Northwestern. After the last couple of nightmares, the Big Ten should be banned from the championship game for a few years. The inherent weakness of the BCS is that it rewards junk like the Big Ten.

Yes, it's true, Nit Picker is one sad sack all right, a wannabe OU groupie with no pull, no talent, nothing remotely interesting to say. He still owes the Picker the payoff on the Colorado/OU wager last season when he predicted a Sooner rout.

Chris (5 years ago)
Baseball-OSU
Basketball-Equal (OU owns the series, OSU has more final fours and overall conference championships)
(W) Basketball-OU
Wrestling-OSU
Golf-OSU
Tennis-OSU
Softball-OU

And, in general, 48 national titles. I mean, ya alot of those were in wrestling and golf, but come on. How many total championships does OU have? 12? (7 in football)
Reno217 (5 years ago)
Once an Aggie, always an Aggie!! At my 50th college reunion this year all my buds raised a BUD that once again we are "a team on the rise" - wait 'til next year! I mean it this time. If not - then I mean it next time, then next time!!
Gosh I love that school--
World Picker (5 years ago)
Alden, Merv isn't that bad. You gotta love somebody who blocked for Jim Thorpe. Bob Barry is in fact entering the Harry Caray zone when he might say something that winds up heard around the world!
Ben (5 years ago)
Will the picker ever realize that the two best football teams in Oklahoma are the Hurricane and Sooners. How can TU steal some of OSU's glory ? "Ya cain't steal whut aint thar".
Chris (5 years ago)
Ben, I would LOVE to see TU compete in the Big 12 South. Wouldn't you?
