Best OU-Texas Game In Series History?
Published: 9/10/2007 11:07 AM
Last Modified: 9/10/2007 11:07 AM

After huge wins over the Denton Teacher's College and the South Beach Party Dolls, the OU bandwagon has taken on so many new passengers that reservations for the championship game in New Orleans are being made.

We haven't seen OU considered to be so loaded since the USC game.

We have one word of caution: Texas.

The OU quarterback is playing great. Who knows about the defense because of the quarterback opposition.

But we watched the Texas-TCU game in its entirety. And stories of a Texas demise are premature. The Longhorn defense can run like crazy and the offense is balanced. TCU is a top 20 team and had trouble getting back to the line of scrimmage. Quarterback McCoy looks a little wobbly, but has great receivers to make up for it.

If the game is far off a pick-'em line, we'd be surprised.

If memory serves us correctly, Stoops seems to be a more dangerous underdog than favorite.

Our outright upset record for the year continues to glide along at 100 percent, adding Washington over Boise and Spurrier over hapless Georgia this week. Last- second point spread losses continue to haunt us, UCLA going in late versus BYU, for example.

In the pros, it's a good thing KC and the Raiders play each other.

Check out the Week 3 Picks: Picker disavows Wolverine love

OU-UT will be highly anticipated. Looks like both teams could come in ranked in the top 7 or so. I'd set the line at OU -3...and take the Sooners.

KC stinks...and I'm not talking Royals. I won some $$ on the Texans Sunday (they were my top pro pick)...along with LSU. Was a good weekend for the "player" in me...

Jeremy -- Every time the bandwagon gets this heavy, watch out. Texas can really run. The game is an absolute toss-up. Getting Texas and a field goal or more would be like Christmas.

Didn't the KC quarterback used to be better?

Maybe Houston is considerably better.

Jeremy (5 years ago)
I live in NE OK...so I get to listen to 610 sports out of KC. The Chiefs have no OL, a fair QB, no WR's, an unproven defense, and a rookie kicker that stinks. In short, KC is on the way down, while Houston is on the way up. I already kinda love Chicago -12.5.

OU-UT is a toss up because it's the Red River Rivalry and both teams are good. UT simply has more questions right now. True: OU still hasn't faced a good QB with good WR talent. But...mark this down...if OU plays a sound game in Big D, they win by two TD's.

Remember Picker...this is the same OU defense that held UT to under 250 yds last season...and it is a year older and more disciplined.

I watched the Texas - TCU game with several other things going on in the house so, suffice to say, I didn't study it and therefore, I'd be happy to accept your (picker's) opinion. But I'd still like to know why those same Horns couldn't run so well against the Arkie State Indians. You must admit, p, the Sooners seem to have found their tight ends.

Anybody who watched HBO's Hard Knocks would know to bet against Kansas City. I also liked the Vikings and the Titans but didn't bet em. I did have Fresno St. against A&M on Saturday. We could have a repeat of the 77-0 score this year when OU hosts the Aggies. Coach Fran's novel is coming right along, from the looks of the sidelines.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
First Edition: That's hilarious, Frannie's novel. I may steal it. Research it. Whatever you call borrowing a good idea. You must admit, that Aggie at quarterback can run the ball. Hard to say how long he'll last, though. It's as close to a wishbone as anything we'll see.

Smith: It's all about match-ups. You start messing with other scores when good teams are involved, it looks too obvious, which spells trouble.

Here's what I think: If TCU and Miami lined up, TCU would kick South Beach's backside into Biscaye Bay, or whatever that's called.

Isn't this Texas better than the Texas that beat OU last year?

What about BYU-TU?

This BYU quarterback is nowhere near as good as last year's.

Here's why Gundy won't change quarterbacks: He picked the one he'd have to toss, thereby admitting a mistake.

WSmith (5 years ago)
I agree that a TCU / Miami matchup would probably bode well for the Toads. Miami looks really average this season at most skill positions except qb, and at qb they are horrid. And about Texas...it's really difficult to say that they are 'better than they were last year' at this point. I do remember telling you in mid-summer that Colt wouldn't live up to expectations...which he hasn't as of yet. Am I an amazing analyst of the situation? Not hardly. But I do recognize a potential sophomore slump when I see one and I thought I saw one coming with Colt a couple of months ago. And will this year's OU - Texas game be the best ever? Man, that's quite a bill to live up to. Potentially, it could be, but like all RR Rivalry contests, no matter how strong one opponent or how weak another might be, it is usually a tight game and never without a few surprises.

By the way, Smith, I must credit you with a solid Bama pick. You're welcome for Washington.

I'm stuck on 7-8-1 overall, second week in a row, forgot to put Wash on the stupid contest list.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
TCU and Miami have comparable defenses...but TCU's offense is prolly a little better than the U's. It's all a mute point, though. From what I've seen, UT is about what they were last season. OU is prolly a little better than last season. OU outgained the Horns by 100 yds last year, but TO's cost them.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
Early OU-UT pick: OU wins by 10. BYU-TU should be a close one, but I'll take the roadies in a close one. Gumby needs to play Robinson at QB, and put Reid out there with him as a "slash" player. They could run all kinds of funny stuff out of that set...
WSmith (5 years ago)
Thanks, Mr P. And while we're being honest and humble, I must begrudgingly admit that I've made more than a little lucre over the years with some of your picks.

Don't buy that, Smith. I know picker in real life and this ain't his job, it's really him. Last week he made the biggest non-football sports error, and then tried to cover it up with arrogance and blaming others. I called him on it and he is just trying to show that he can exhibit humility and poise. Everything this guy does is for show.

8-7-1 two weeks in a row? Maybe you should try a new way to pick games, instead of listening to the voices, try flipping a coin at least you should go 50/50. Better yet try reading the Sports Page! Since you work there you could probable get one for free!
Vernon (5 years ago)
Excuse me, it's worse than I thought. You went 7-8-1 again.

Will someone loan me some money so I can make some bets on all this??? This is good stuff Maynard!! A sure bet is...OU will be the best team not in the final. Just don't see anyone moving SoCal and LSU out just yet. Too bad, since our Sooners look like a better than even bet against the Horns and Huskers. Colt will be treated like a colt by the OU defense and "Slammin' Sammy" may be in for one magic season. GO SOONERS!!!

RSNYC, I, too, "know" they guy superficially offline (although we've never met face to face) and I find him far more reasonable in that forum; I understand that his online personna as 'P' is a role and I understand that he either completely ignores weekends when he blows his calls or, as you've pointed out, blusters through. But I have the same problem on my website; when I have an embarrassing weekend (as all pickers everywhere will), I generally just ignore it and move on as well.
WSmith (5 years ago)
So, Picker, now that you've been given the twenty-five cent psychoanalytical treatment, I'll be disappointed if you don't check in with a few clever put downs.
RSNYC (5 years ago)
Yes, Smith, ignoring things is one thing, but blaming innocent people for things they did not say or do, and not apologizing for it when information is laid bare, is childish. In my case, he accused me of stealing somebody else's opinion, and it turned out he got the name of the horse, the race, the date, the track, and the running surface all wrong. Totally arrogant when proven wrong. Plus he asked me to make a legal bet for him, I did, he lost, and he didn't pay me back. Heap of trash.
RSNYC (5 years ago)
I suspect that very soon I will no longer continue to post on this erudite forum, so best to you Smith. Picker told me about this blog and described it like this: "I really rile the hillbillies." Enjoy.
WSmith (5 years ago)
Interesting comment since the Picker is a born and raised Oklahoman as well. I will say that the range of education and intelligence on these blogs appears to go from college plus to somewhere down the evolutionary ladder, but the 'Hillbilly' comment sounds like something I might say directed at a certain element...but not at everyone.

No, born in Nebraska, raised in OK City. But that statement is not that strange, not really. See, I am a woman, and educated, and he was trying to impress me and show me that he is better than his readers, and in control of them. He has riled ME with his dishonesty, his transparency as a lecherous man, and his immaturity. The man can write, but in the end, it's not worth subjecting myself one-on-one to his insensitivity, his lies, his empty promises, and his arrogance. And I feel that a public forum, where he likes to shine brightest, is the best place to express my opinions. Lucky y'all.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
