Big 12 Again A Disgrace
Published: 12/31/2010 1:56 PM
Last Modified: 12/31/2010 1:56 PM

Missouri loses to Iowa's second or third team.

Kansas State gives up 1,000 yards to a Big East nobody.

Baylor resembled a juco against a lousy Big Ten team.

Nebraska humiliated itself, its state, its former and future stars, versus one of the Pac's worst. Nebraska will become a Big Ten also-ran and will rue the day it left the wimpy Big 12.

Only OU and OSU are the only ones who can play a lick.

The Big 12 is the most consistently overrated football conference. Next year OU will again be number one nationally pre-season, Texas will again have the top recruiting class of the year, and will lose four or so.

True, the bowl system is a meaningless farce. Nebraska would have rather been ice fishing.

Still, how can this conference be so highly regarded and flop so often?

A brilliant homer media: Not only are we great, but so is everybody we play!

I'm very glad to see that you have finally acknowledged that OU can "play a lick". I know that fans of a certain team are typically more critical than any of their detractors could ever hope to be, but I never thought I'd ever read a good thing about OU from you. I shall savor this moment!

Another thought... Will Texas really only lose "four or so" next year? Their entire program is in disarray at the moment. Perhaps this is by design, but they are without coaches at major positions and have been for awhile. It's not like they're preparing for a bowl game either...

OU is good.

But it is seldom as good as the media roadies make it out to be.

The homers have already installed OU as double-digit favorites in all its games next year!

One indication of having a life is patience.

It will be interesting to see how Heupel handles the play-calling.

The Big 12 is probably about the fourth best football conference. It is strong toward the tip-top, absolute junk in the middle and below.

Nebraska versus Wisky and the like instead of KU and that crowd?

Bad move Tom.

The Big 12 play has been disgusting so far. No excuses for Baylor, Nebraska or K-State to lose but they managed to do so.

It looks like OSU and OU have to represent the conference this year.

I don't see A&M beating LSU but Tech should have no problem beating Northwestern.

Nebraska is going to have a fun time with that transition next year. I am still trying to figure out what I was watching in San Diego last night.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Hedged, clearly the single craziest thing to happen this college football season is Nebraska's performance at OSU.

The Nebraska quarterback threw 40-yard lasers and ran something like a 3.9 40-yard dashes. Since then, he hasn't been able to hit much except the field of play.

If OSU and Nebraska played 10 more times, it's hard to see how Oklahoma State could lose more than one.

It's no wonder the Big Ten sent a car for those guys -- bring money, and bring that passing game.
Hedged (2 years ago)
The Magic left Taylor Martinez after that game in Stillwater for sure. He pretty much beat them by himself but hasn't done anything since. He is the Husker offense apparently.

I just regret assuming NU was a gimmie bet in all of my football pools. Luckily everyone else did as well.

Mr. Picker, is that the same headline you used last year and the year before? Have a healthy New Year.

You're the best, Gene-O.

I was joined at the hip with the old Big 8, and by nature and accident of birth am affiliated with the Big 12. But Picker, I hope you aren't seriously expecting anyone with an IQ above dull-normal to take exception with the point you're making here...
WillyJ (2 years ago)
Nebraska didn't exactly go out of the conference will the blaze of glory they were expecting, did they?

But yes Pick, once again the Big 12 is disgracing themselves in the "ESPN Post Season Series."

Oh, and thanks for another year of entertaining columns. . always enjoy the read.

Bowls are all about who wants to play. So far, Tulsa and Troy are the two teams that have seemed the most determined to play first, party second. I have a feeling A&M might make a good showing, but I wouldn't bet a plug nickel on Tech. I think their worst performance is yet to come.
Don's World (2 years ago)
You are dead on with where you rank the Big 12 Pick. In fact if they do not pull a couple more wins, your ranking may be a kindness. I stopped trusting what Bob says about OU ever since the "So Good It's Scary" year. So all this talk about best recruiting class has me skeptical. But you do have to throw Bob and the boys a bone, there is no program out there that knows how to work the rankings like they do in Norman. Salud!
I disagree a tad with what Tulsan In Exile has said about the teams that want to play so far, as FSU and SC was an absolutely brutal game, as was the Clemson/South Florida game, concussions and broken ribs galore. The Notre Dame/Miami game resembled a pillow fight much of the night. So T I E is right on there, as he is about Tech. They may win, but I sure wouldn't bet on them.

SEC 0-3, but I'm sure they're still the top conference for Medium Game Picker! DW, 2 big 12 teams lose in the last minutes of their bowl games but not enough broken bones and concussed players to be considered football I suppose.

I agree that Nebraska will come to regret leaving the easier task of winning the Big XII North for the Big Ten. Perhaps the bigger paycheck will be enough of a consolation for the forfeiture of their claim of being one of the elite football programs. Time will tell.

This bowl collapse by the Big XII is not helping the chances of the conference surviving with only 10 teams. Two great programs need to be brought in quickly. The conference should be aggressive in going after Arkansas, LSU, Florida State, Miami, TCU, BYU, and even Boise should be considered. The addition of two of the five southern schools would result in OU and OSU becoming members of the North. The addition of Boise and BYU would keep the current South in place.
Tulsan in Exile (2 years ago)
Big-12 definitely needs to add two big programs. But who would want to join right now? Arkansas would be a great addition, but they would never want to join. They are recruiting very well right now and doing better than anyone thought they would in the SEC. TCU has already made their move. It makes no sense geographically, but it will get them into BCS bowls. Nope, I'm afraud Big XII is out f luck for now.
Oklahomer (2 years ago)
Tulsan in Exile: You may be right, but there should be a huge effort by the Big XII to save itself. On the TCU point, they might be willing to reconsider their move to the Big East because of the expense involved in traveling that far. My favorite scenario would be for TCU and Florida State to become members of the South and OU and OSU moving to the North.

Texas, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Florida State, and Baylor would make a strong South.

Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, and Iowas State would make a stronger North than has existed with Colorado and Nebraska as members.

The big problems would be in getting Florida State on board and in overcoming opposition to admitting TCU. On the latter point, the weaker schools would be wise to make this move. The addition of the Florida market would negate the addition of a 5th Texas team within the Texas market. Where would Iowa State, Kansas State, Baylor, Missouri, and Texas Tech go if the Big XII folded? The Big XII with Florida State and TCU would immediately be much stronger and eventually much more attractive than the version with Colorado and Nebraska.

State & Sooners lead the way in the New Big 12(10)?

Now that every team plays every team, a true Conference Champion?

New 9 game format more opportunity for multiple BCS Bowl bids? This year both Pac 10 & Big 10 (Non-championship game) each received 2 BCS Bowl bids.

Less Out of Conference Games=less outside exposure? Less vulnerability issues.

When it comes to bowl games, The Big 12 historically has won only 50% of their bowl games

Big 12 did win nearly 79% of Out of Conference games in 2010

Picker is right again. Sure had a bad day yesterday though. Hope he does better today....except his OU pick. I think OU covers simply because we are bigger, stronger and faster... I think.

LaffALot says>>>>When it comes to bowl games, The Big 12 historically has won only 50% of their bowl games

True stat but you have to put it into context.

"Only" .500 isn't all that bad. Through last season the Big 12 record trails the SEC and Pac 10....but leads the Big 10 and ACC.

Pick, take a shower, shave, pick yourself up and step away from the TV for awhile. Call some old friends. Get out and take the dogs for a walk. Relax.

OU74, two of the SEC's losses were from teams without winning records (Georgia and Tennessee). And 6-6 Kentucky gets to play the Big East Co-champion Pitt while Big 12 champ OU gets to play the other Big East co-champion.

Its funny that the SEC is undermatched in nearly every bowl game they play (7 out of 10), and the Big 12 has the upper hand in 7 of 8 bowl games, yet the Big 12 will be lucky to have a winning record.

Why do some Big 12 fans feel the need to argue whether or not the SEC is the toughest conference in football? At least the Picker has figured it out.
Blue&Gold (2 years ago)
OU74...there is a difference between losing to decent teams and losing to Syracuse and Illinois,2 basketball schools. Georgia lost a game to C-USA champion who is ranked. Tennessee lost a last second thrilling game to a UNC team who was a top 15 team early and slumped because they got rocked with the agent scandal and had 14 players suspended, some of which never regained eligibility but they were still a very good and talented team. As of today, SEC won 3 games (Mississippi State rocked Michigan, Alabama rocked Michigan State, and Florida beat up on Penn State pretty good.

Even in wins, OSU didn't look stellar against a lackluster and average Arizona team, and while OU is in control of their game against UCONN, UCONN is still in the game heading into the 4th quarter and OU has been less than dominating like they should be and what everyone expected.
Don's World (2 years ago)
Stellar Blue and Gold? Probably not, they were both yeoman like wins, but that is a point in both OSU and OU's favor, neither game was in doubt and never felt in doubt. I have no idea what everyone expected, but what unfolded was exactly what I expected.
Actually OU74, I was saying with the exception of a couple of teams, that effort was being put into the games. The hitting has been intense. I kept hearing it over and over, "well the team that wants to be here the most will win" That is just an excuse for losers. We were disinterested so we lost. Competitors compete, if team doesn't? Then they aren't a very good team, so the best team does win.

It appears Nebraska has gone from a so-so conference to a less than so-so conference. Meanwhile, the SEC is a little over a week away from winning its fifth consecutive national crown.

Bowl games used to be special. Now there are so many that they seem to be little more than an extension of the regular season.
OU_Sooner74 (2 years ago)
Love 918 Blue and Gold, poor picked on SEC. They definitely own the Big 10 today, so you are probably feeling a little less panic from when I last posted. I respect what the SEC has accomplished, but if OU had their bowl games at home like SEC teams, then who knows??? Anyway, OU wins, Tulsa wins, OSU wins, state of Oklahoma is looking pretty this bowl season regardless of conference bowl records. Time for a 16 team playoff IMHO......
OU_Sooner74 (2 years ago)
DW, it is nice to see games with great effort and desire, I agree. The problem with the bowl system is most of the BIG games occur 30 to 40 days (even longer for some teams)after the last regular season game. What a joke, time for a playoff.
