Big 12 Disaster
Published: 10/5/2011 2:38 PM

David Boren. MICHAEL WYKE/Tulsa World

What havoc has Boss Boren wrought?

As Missouri packs its bags to flee for its life and sanity, the Big 12 is looking at adding teams from Deliverance Country (West Virginia) to the moon (BYU).

These panic-stricken additions would make the Big 12 one of the the worst conferences in college football.

Boss Boren scared the Pac Ten away, spooked Missouri, let Texas get away with highway robbery, and has dragged down Oklahoma State in the process. Being joined at the hip with OU no longer looks like such a dream.

Meanwhile the conference is being run by some old guy passing out party favors and saying things are fine.

What's a fan to do?

Expect the opposite of what the mainstream media says and take it one game at a time.

Please explain the last sentence of what is a 100% accurate account of how Boren has destroyed the value of the OU brand to the benefit of Texas.

Pickman, the premise behind Boren negotiating for OU and oSu to go to the Pac was that it was a foregone conclusion that MO was following Aggie to the SEC.

Now that it appears that is a reality, are you still critical of Boren's attempt to get the two state schools into a decent conference with the outside chance that, with the XII crumbling, Texas would have to choose between negotiating its network, going Indy or being the lone football power in what you have called one of the worst conferences in the nation?

It seems to be that MO's actions have validated Boren's actions all along. Not his fault that Scott either (i) used him to get Texas and didn't complete his own bluff, (ii)got ahead of his presidents and never had the votes to take us in the first place or (iii) simply lied to Boren.

A little off the subject, but Gilbert is transferring from Texas.
The Picker (last year)
Hard to believe Gilbert kept Texas so close to OU last year.

Whatever the media says based on unnamed or anonymous sources is a crock.

I worked for Boren and he's a master negotiator. He doesn't make that play unless he has been assured by Scott. He doesn't say that he will not allow the future of OU to be "determined by any university from any other state" unless he is convinced that he has trumped Texas in the Pac.

Boren knew MO was gone, that the XII was toast, and he perfectly positioned both state schools.

It is folly to suggest MO is leaving because Boren "spooked" them into doing so.

You are confusing the cause with the effect, my dear Picka.

Now that it appears MO is following Aggie, a deal to get OU, oSu, Tech and Texas (or, if they refused to negotiate the network, TCU, Kansas or BYU) into the Pac doesn't look like something a "dummie" would promote, does it?

If you still do, I will raise my hand so that you may count me among those you consider "dummies".

W*T*F*? What other options does OSU have? They had no other options other than jumping both feet in with OU....

Boren has done all he can and is a great leader... We are fortunate to have had his leadership for as long as we have...

So pick... What should Boren done in your eyes?
JG78 (last year)
Did Boren cause Nebraska, Colorado, A&M and potentially Missouri to leave?

You are a putz pick... At least you know to attack OU when you need to drum up web hits... God knows if you throug Hargis under the buss no one would have cared.
WVU (last year)
WVU has won two BCS bowls in the last few years(including one against Oklahoma)which is more than most teams have won in the same span. Secondly, our basketball team is very competitive in the Big East and went to the Final Four (not too shabby for some folks from "Deliverance Country"). Both sports programs are on the upswing with our coaches (both of whom used to coach in the Big 12-Huggins and Holgorsen) so WVU would in fact be a great addition in the Big 12.
dcood (last year)
It might be a good addition on paper but have you looked at a map lately? It aint no 6 hour drive to WVU...or has the kid factor, like most people, been totally lost on you too? Enjoy that Tuesday night hoops action in WVU...those kids will get on right on goin to class the next day when their flight gets em home around 4 am.

"Deliverance" was set in Georgia NOT West Virginia by the way......
The Picker (last year)
OU should have joined the SEC months ago.
JG78 (last year)
Pick, You argued as much as any that keeping the big 12 together was as good as option as any...

All Boren did was gain leverage by attempting to call Texas's hand by going to the pac 12, but knowing OU wasn't going without Texas and the Pac 12 wasn't taking them other than as a package. Boren hoped Texas would concede the LHN but if they wouldn't that would give the remainder of the Big 12 the leverage they needed for true reform.
Please see Beebe being canned, equal revenue sharing, and the LHN conceding high school content. In my book it was brilliant because we are strenghting our conference, protecting regional rivalries and creating a case for Missouri to stay and to attrack new members...

JG78 (last year)
And if we joined the SEC, TEXAS sure as heck wasn't coming and then we lose that fertal recruiting ground you have claimed we were crazy for trying to leave...

We tried to get the PAC 12 to take OU/OSU/Texas and Tech to protect the regional base we needed. Pac 12 wasn't biting without the desolving of the LHN... We got the next best scenario...

The Picker (last year)
Spin until you win.

Missouri is outta here.

TCU is fine. Weak but fine.

Then things get ugly. Louisville plays football in skirts.

It's like picking "best available" in about the fifth round of the draft.

just readin the sunday paper waitin to see, in classic Picker style, how bad Texas is now that OU embarrassed them...
MexiMike (last year)
dcood, of course Texas is bad. I've been saying so since the very beginning. Media members of ESPN have been pumping up Texas for their own interests and local media (even the Picker, himself) have fallen right in line with it.

"Garrett Gilbert is gone. That must mean Texas is back!"

Wrong.

Turns out that the other two QBs fold like paper just as Gilbert did when there was the slightest amount of pressure.

The simple fact is that Texas hadn't played anyone good up until OU. And now that they have, hopefully local media has been shaken awake from the ESPN spell cast upon them.

It could have been worse Mike, OU actually didn't hit stride til second quarter. It will be much the same with OSU this weekend. I can't believe pick fell into the hype over the 4 super freshmen of Texas. Come on pick you know better, they aren't the four freshmen of the Appocolypse. I am loving this as OU, OSU fan, they will miss Gilbert, as he was their best QB, and they will throw these two in and out, up and down like Simms and Applewhite. OSU by 28, if Texas is once again lucky like they were against OU.
tulsandn (last year)
Is Gilbert transferring to Tulsa ????

My OU-Bevo predict was 52-17, almost got it.... I underestimated the Sooners....

Oh the conference thing raises it ugly head once again.... The Big 12(?) is a joke, they can't even label the # of teams in the conference correctly & now the thought adding hillbillies, Mormons(no offense) & 4ever wannabes to mix makes it all better ????

aTm & maybe Mizzou should thank their lucky stars that they will get to move on after this "academic" school year.... The Big 12 men at the top say they got the Big12 but like in real life it's really probably only 5 or 6....
