Oklahoma State is tipping off the 2011-12 basketball season with a Wednesday night exhibition game, so this seems like as good a time as any to ask this question: How good are the Cowboys?
OSU was picked by coaches to finish seventh in the Big 12. Travis Ford said he wouldn’t picked his team more than about one spot higher.
The good news for the Cowboys is it’s difficult to tell exactly how good any Big 12 teams will be. Ford said the league is as balanced from top to bottom as he has seen it.
“Normally you’ve got a team like Kansas, which has been ranked in the top five. Or you’ve got a Texas that is top five. I don’t think we have that right now.”
Ford said those schools are rebuilding, but he said they “rebuild a little bit different than the rest of us, probably.”
The team with the most talent? Baylor.
Schools with plenty of experience (Missouri, Texas A&M) are breaking in new coaches.
Here’s what it all means: The league seems to be up for grabs.
“I think it’s good for everybody,” Ford said. “It could be good or bad. You could find yourself at the top or you could find yourself at the bottom.”
Because of all the unknowns, Ford said everybody feels like they have a chance. That’s exciting. “But also you are wondering a little of how it is going to be.”
